forum member @Mharv had similar problems with purevpn and DSL-AC88U and could not get it to work
best to send feedback form and see if ASUS have suitable beta firmware with fix ?

October 4, 2019 at 9:17 pm #4693I think my issue is regardless the VPN provider.
In ‘Import .ovpn file’,Β when I click ‘choose file’ and select a OVPN file from the provider nothing happens.
I have sent feedback to Asus.Β Not holding my breath to receive a response.

I am running express VPN via my Netgear XR500 so may swap them over for the DSL-AC88U and see if I have the same issues
Who’s your VPN with ?

October 4, 2019 at 9:55 pm #4696October 5, 2019 at 8:18 am #4697I am testing PrivateVPN to see if they are any good.
Have you tried any other VPN Providers and if so did they work ?

October 5, 2019 at 10:45 am #4699October 5, 2019 at 11:26 am #4700I have tried PureVPN and PrivateVPN. Both with same issue.
That is good news with regards that both do not work, was that with OPENVPN/L2TP ?
Once I understand which Protocol you had issues with I will drop ASUS an email and try to dig a little deeper, can you screen dump your VPN settings so I can show them also, (hide account details) ;-)

Process is correct so should work, I assume you are also using the modem inbuilt into DSL-AC88U ?

October 6, 2019 at 12:26 pm #4709As an update, I tried to load my ExpressVPN settings upon my DSL-AC88U and can confirm that I could mot establish a VPN, my ExpressVPN settings work on both my RT-AC86U (running ASUSWRT-Merlin) and my Netgear XR500
Looking at Logs it shows the following –
OctΒ 6 12:21:10 DSL-AC88U daemon.err openvpn[7528]: Options error: Unrecognized option or missing parameter(s) in /data/openvpn/client/client.ovpn:5: remote (2.3.2)
SO will chat with ASUS and see what they say

October 8, 2019 at 10:44 am #4728@dodgydrains I spoke with ASUS and they acknowledge there are VPN issues with the DSL-AC88U.
I also asked if fix would be introduced in next firmware release and at the moment, it is unknown as work is ongoing
