Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has an experience with a Rasberry pi?Β I’m thinking about getting one but want to get one with a NVMe and store the OS etc on it.Β Looking at the “options” when buying, it seems there is a nvme hat, a nvme base, active cooler etc… and some different cases that can fit the NVMe and cooler.
Anyone know what exactly need to buy to have a Rasberry pi 5, nvme to hold OS and software/files etc, I presume best to get the cooler as will be on 24/7 and I’d get the hdmi cable and 2 x psu’s (so have a spare) also.Β I’d also want a case, i see this case: Argon NEO 5 M.2 NVME Case for Raspberry Pi 5 and if i understand correct, this would mean not needing to buy a cooler or nvme hat/board as it comes int he case?
New to rasberry pi, never had ne before but wanted to try using for home automation with a view to potentially having a screen (free standing) showing various things all in one place as opposed to using different apps on my phone/tablet.
Thanks for any help
Kev

October 3, 2024 at 8:46 pm #34250Not sure what Raspberry pi kit you have already if any,Β but I did see the option for 4-way NVMe RAID for the Raspberry Pi 5, looks like a mini server.
Have you thought about microSD (for boot) and keeping the NVMe for file storage only ?

October 4, 2024 at 6:59 pm #34256I don’t have a raspberry pi at the moment and have never had one or used one so will be something totally new.Β My idea was to have NVMe for boot and storage as I believe will be quicker and avoid having to have a SD card.
Not seen the raid option, i was planning it for home automation to display all the things on one screen and allow to interact with etc as at the moment i have to open several apps as different makes etc

October 4, 2024 at 9:15 pm #34258This is what I have seen on Amazon around Β£50 for the Raid base and supports NVMe boot.
Lots of different options for redundancy which is good to see and seen some options for NAS also.

October 13, 2024 at 8:08 pm #34526Hi,
So got one, have put it all together, didn’t get the paid card, just went for standard pi and nvme drive.
Setup homeassistant on it, however, project has hit a bit of a snag….
So the pi has LAN port and also wifi and I checked and could see from ppl online that you can have lan and wifi active at same time so thought great. However, seems not in my scenario.
I have main network and guest wifi but seems the pi wont see guest wifi devices despite the wifi connecting to it ok.
As most of my devices are on guest network, its unable to detect/reach them. I’ve tried using it just on wifi (to fool it) but i cant access homeassistant at all over wifi so spanner in the works… bit of an expensive disaster tbh. It seems it wont work on guest wifi’s, has to be normal wifi. so only option i have is to allow guest network to see main network which bit reluctant to doo.
Only other option I can see is to change router for one with vlans and then maybe i can put lan into guest network?

October 13, 2024 at 8:46 pm #34530Brave chap you are, how have you configured you pi in terms of network positioning, is the pi now acting as main (primary) router or is it just acting as a node / device connecting to the guest wifi ?

October 14, 2024 at 5:44 pm #34537On AVM there is the possibility to let see clients on guest-SSID each other or to disable it.
Maybe on Asus there is a similarly option to activate.
But you probably have to activate WLAN as backhaul, because now it is connected via LAN to the master router and a LAN-connection is on home network and not on guest network. For this on AVM you can set LAN4 to act as guest, so clients (or a router) on LAN4 will be in guest network like WLAN clients on guest SSID.
Dont know wether Asus has these features or not.You need to login in order to vote
October 14, 2024 at 6:15 pm #34538My PI is configured as a device on main network (wired) with fixed IP.Β I have then enabled wireless on the PI and set that to a static IP on the guestnetwork.
So my thinking was it would use both connections to detect devices, but appears not.
Asus does have a option on Guest network to access intranet, current disabled.Β If i enable it, I’m assuming it will see both main network and guest network devices as in it will simply add a route to the different subnets.
I don’t think asus has a option of setting a lan port to guest as it doesn’t do vlans.Β the Pro version does but I’m a little loathed to pay another Β£200+ to buy essentially the same router but to get vlans.
and I’m not sure how vlans would help with guest wifi other than allow a LAN port ont he guest network but would mean getting an additional nic for the pi and the case doesn’t have a option for it.
So far I’ve bought
Raspberry pi 5 8GB version
argeon neo case (inbuilt fan and NVMe slow)
500gb nvme drive (samsung)
pi microSd card to get the homeassistant setup on the nvme initially)
HDMi-micro HDMi cable as wanted ability to hook up to a monitor if issues
seperate microsd card as thought needed to put homeassistant on separate microsd card and then put on nvme but turns out didn’t need it so its going to go to my dad as a spare card for his camera
pi charger
costs look small when you look but soon add up. Bit annoying it doesn’t work how i invisaged, i like have main network and IoT in separate guest network to separate them.Β Any issues turning on the enable access intranet? Will it re-assign all devices IP address or just setup a route between the 2 netwrks?

October 14, 2024 at 6:19 pm #34539Actually just looked again, guest network has 2 options
Access Intranet – currently disabled
Guest network on AiMesh – currently set to Router Only but has option to change to All AiMesh Node(s)
I don’t have a AiMesh, I just have the RTAX-86U router but when i click on AiMesh option, it lists all my clients in both main and guest networks
I’m assuming I’d need to enabled Access Intranet for it to see the devices?

October 14, 2024 at 6:50 pm #34540October 14, 2024 at 7:03 pm #34542Thanks, considering turning on access intranet but not sure if that will change all the IP of my devices to the main wifi IP range or leave them in the guest IP range but just create a route between the 2 network.

October 14, 2024 at 8:03 pm #34543No, there wont change any IP range, neither main nor guest, they will put only a route from one to the other to get access to the other clients.

October 15, 2024 at 6:23 pm #34544Hi,
So interesting… I’ve enabled access intranet and guess what.. it has changed the IPs of all my devices in guest network to be in the main network…. so didn’t create a route as i thought it would…
Now just hoping they all still work….
