Had fun the other week as one of our cars, a Toyota Aygo Mk2 (20 plate) has a damp drivers side rear passenger footwell and mould had started to form.
(I took pictures at the time when I was doing the work, but only now had time to post them)

Looking online does seem a few possible causes which include water ingress behind the tailgate (boot lid) brake light.
So checked door seals and door drain holes and all looked clear and no sign of water, then I opened the tailgate and removing the brake light access panel and could see a water line and the area was sodden.

I then removed all the water from the tailgate with kitchen towel and checked all grommets which seemed secured.
The Toyota Aygo Mk2 tailgate does not seem to have any inbuilt drainage holes, so I decided to make my own.
I drilled 3 holes at the point where the two metal surfaces (skins) join, to allow future water ingress to drain away naturally when tailgate is opened as water can run down the wiring conduit.
The holes where then painted with a zinc oxide to hopefully stop the holes rusting at some point in the future.

I then also modified the brake light access panel to allow water to drain out when the tailgate (boot lid) is in its shut position (just incase).

After removing the two small pieces of foam, I then re attached the brake light access panel and ensured slots are facing up when tailgate (boot lid) is open.

Then finally to stop the main cause of the damp footwell which we think was water getting in behind the tailgate brake light, I used some clear silicon and applied a thin bead around the edge of the light assembly.
note: I did not remove the brake light and apply silicon to the mating surfaces as this makes future brake light access and removal much more difficult.
Hopefully this will stop future water ingress and if water does find its way in, then the 3x drain holes and slots in the access panel should stop any future water build up and leaks inside the car.

December 11, 2024 at 5:01 pm #35092A week ago we had Storm Darragh and rainfall was torrential, so far the Toyota Aygo rear passenger footwell remains dry.
Only time will tell if the tailgate brake light leaking was the problem.
