Hi,
anyone signed up with CityFibre? Parents had a leaflet through and quiet a bit cheaper than BT so keeping as a possible option to move away from BT next year when contract is up so thought I’d see if anyone has switched and what opinions are? I see you get the same speed upload and download with city fibre i.e. if you signed up to 150mb, you get 150mb upload and 150mb download so not too bad and for a fraction of the cost of BT as no line rental to pay either.
Do you *have* to use CityFibre’s equipment i.e. router or can you use your own one? i presume can use your own.
Thanks
Kev

September 14, 2022 at 3:44 pm #20854I believe CityFibre is a wholesale network much like BT Openreach is for DSL, they just pass the traffic through to the wholesale customer. How they terminate sessions is up to them.
Depending on which ISP you use, will depend upon equipment options, but much like most of the others, as long as you leave the Fibre ONT is place, then just simply connect whatever router you like via WAN port.
Slightly different, but I just set-up a Virgin Media M100 fibre package in one of my kids Student house share, they use Coaxial for last leg, but there is an option to put the supplied router in Modem mode and then you plug in whatever you wish

September 14, 2022 at 3:51 pm #20855I did also read that to set-up your router for say Vodafone, they use VLAN ID. 911 which is what CityFibre default VLAN ID is, then either by wireshark or call Vodafone directly for PPPoE login credentials etc.
Edit: VLAN ID. 911, could be a red herring as this maybe handled by ONT ?
Alas no personnel experience.

September 14, 2022 at 4:19 pm #20860If CityFibre was in my Area, I would jump at the chance, not so Virgin Media with their famous wiring escapades (subjective of course)

Agree, Virgin for UK at least it seems (my view) to be a budget Fibre Broadband service provided, so installs, call centers (India) etc. are to offer value for money – which for some (myself included) is not desirable.
