Windows Phone was Microsoft’s mobile operating system, launched in 2010 as a successor to Windows Mobile. It featured a unique Metro design language and was aimed at consumers rather than enterprises. Over the years, it evolved into Windows Phone 8 and later Windows 10 Mobile, which integrated more closely with Windows PCs.
Despite Microsoft’s efforts, Windows Phone struggled against Android and iOS, leading to its discontinuation in 2020. While some enthusiasts still experiment with running Windows on mobile devices, official support has ended. If you’re interested in reviving the Windows Phone experience, some users have found ways to make Android devices resemble Windows Phone.

After discontinuing Windows Phone, Microsoft shifted its focus to software and services for mobile platforms like Android and iOS. They introduced the Surface Duo, a dual-screen Android device, as an attempt to stay in the mobile hardware space. However, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella later expressed regret over abandoning Windows Phone, acknowledging that they could have reinvented the category between PCs, tablets, and phones.
There have been rumours that Microsoft might re-enter the smartphone market, potentially with a device running a full version of Windows optimized for mobile. Some concept designs even imagine a Windows Phone running Windows 12, resembling a micro-PC in your pocket. However, Microsoft has not officially announced any plans to revive Windows Phone.

May 16, 2025 at 1:38 pm #37785I thought windows phones were great, I owned one or two back in the day.Β It suffered hugely from lack of developer support for apps though and that’s a problem they will still have if they were to launch a platform again. That said competition is always good, they usually have good hardware offerings such as their surface laptop is very good.Β I would consider a surface phone.

May 16, 2025 at 5:42 pm #37786Dito, I loved the over large square tile and very easy to navigate around, like yourself lack of Apps forced me over to Android initially and then finally iOS.
Hopefully we’ll find out whether the rumours are true, or not and cost effective hardware will be a real bonus.
