    Hi @booji,

Its apparent that you’ve spent a lot of time in trying to restore the full capabilities of your DSL-AC68U.

I also haveΒ DSL-AC68U and like you had it connected to a HG612 modem on LAN1.Β  That setup worked well but I wanted to connect anotherΒ a device to that ethernet port so I followed the instructions in this thread and converted the DSL into an RT-AC68U.

I initially felt the conversion had been a complete success, but then occasionally was unable to get a Wi-Fi connection to the DSL, acting as a RT-AC68U Ai-mesh node, and at the same time experienced Wi-Fi calling issues, which I don’t know may have stemmed from this changeover.

Restoring the full capabilities of the DSL-AC68U appeared to go well, though once this had finalised, I couldn’t then get the device to make a VDSL connection to my ISP!! Β I initially tried to use LAN1 as the WAN port, but that failed – no WAN or gateway IP addresses were assigned.Β  And this situation was replicated when I then attempted to use the built-in DSL capabilities of the device – absolutely no connection, nothing.

I was then starting to think that I was in similar pickle to you @booji.Β  Trying to clear/reset the NVRAM and following all the other good suggestions on this thread didn’t make any difference,Β  I just couldn’t get the DSL to make a connection.Β  Fortunately, I then remember that prior to converting the device into an RT-AC68U I had backed up its configuration via the administration settings in the router’s Web UI, so I restored this and bingo the connection sprang into life – sorted!!

So, my question to you now, is whether you also backed up your DSL’s configuration via its Web UI?? (This process creates a CFG file)

Many thanks @uk-sentinel for your prompt post, with good suggestions, and apologises for being slow in terms of getting back to you.

Yesterday, I changed my setup back so that the DSL-AC68U is once again acting as a DSL, Ai-Mesh router and the RT-AC68U is the node again.Β  I ran into problems in restoring the full capabilities of the DSL-AC68U and time, as yet, hasn’t allowed me to explore further my Wi-Fi calling issues.Β  However, I thought it would be still a good idea to come back to you – here goes:

Does both Node and AiMesh Router have same Wifi name, (they should do)

~ Yep, I initially configured the wifi settings etc for the Ai-Mesh router, then reset the otherΒ RT-AC68U and used Asus’s web UI to automatically configure that as the node – and this process assigned it with the same wifiΒ  name.

our Android Phone, (S8) is it upto date and is the wifi calling using standard Android wifi calling seetings (no app)?

~ My answer to those question is ‘yes’ and ‘yes’.Β  I’ve recently updated the phone with the latest firmware, which isΒ  Android 9.0 Pie One UI.

are both Routers running the same firmware version?

~ Yep, formerly both the router and node were running the most recent firmware for the RT-AC68U, version 3.0.0.4.384.45149

For WiFi call and Skype and video issue, Could you try to disable – LAN > Switch Control > NAT Acceleration if available?

~ I made this change in the former setup, but I’m unsure whether it made any difference in respect of wifi-calling.Β  I intend to explore this further now that the DSL-AC68U is once again acting as the Ai-mesh router

the converted DSL-AC68U is the likely cause as it is set up as Node, maybe an option to make the DSL-AC68U (prime) and RT-AC68 as node

~ That’s one of the reasons why I opted to convert the DSL-AC68U back to being an Ai-Mesh router.

Ultimately, I realise that I need to conduct further testing in respect of this WIFI-calling issue and any further comments and/or suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi, I’ve been following this thread with interest and referring to the guidance it initially provides converted my DSL-AC68U into RT-AC68U.Β  I have to say, UK Sentinel and Six have given some absolutely brilliant advice in respect of this, and also to you booji with regards to your specific issue.

I see that one of the pics you posted on 20th March shows your firmware as being version β€˜3.0.0.4.384_2118’, while the other indicates version β€˜9.0.0.4.384_56087’, so clearly something is wrong here.Β  And coincidentally Asus has just released version β€˜3.0.0.4.384_56087’ for the device!!

I’m no expert in this field at all, but if I was you I would be following Six’s suggestion of trying to clear/reset the NVRAM.Β  I’ve stumbled upon a post in which someone says the syntax to achieve this on RT-AC56 and RT-AC68U routers is: Β β€˜mtd-erase2 nvram’. I’m not sure maybe you’veΒ  tried this already…

The thread then goes on to recommend doing a power cycle immediately after this in order to clear the nvram – the advice in this respect is either to press the reset button for 5 seconds while the router is on, or turn it on with the WPS button pressed, wait 10 secs, then release it.Β  Β Incidentally, the thread I’m referring to is here: Β https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-ac66u-reset-clear-nvram.13550/

Good luck – hope this works for your DSL-AC68U

thanks for that @Six, but I’m already familiar with the specs of the DSL-AC68U – this conversion will enable it to become a wired AiMesh repeater, and I just need a couple of LAN devices to connect this. Its at the router end of my setup where I would gain another LAN port by replacing the DSL-AC68U with the RT-AC68U…

Incidentally, I’m also into TP-link – I can’t believe the price of that 5-port gigabit switch!

Thanks for getting back to me @six and UK Sentinel.Β  My internet connection is currently via WAN ethernet on the DSL and the fact this implies the device only has three available LAN ports is driving me insane.Β  I’m a bit busy atm but yep when I get the chance I’ll do the conversion then test the reversal process..

This is interesting.Β  If I converted my DSL-AC68U into a RT-AC68U following this methodΒ  and then wanted to change back , I presume it would just be matter of repeating steps 1 and 2 with the latest DSL firmware from asus.com, without changing any of the nvram settings @six mentions?
