Something like as you suggested should work as it connects via Ethernet, rather than USB. Definitely best to allow ASUS router to fail over and back again and as you say the LM1200 would need to be on 24/7, never tried this way of connection before.
If you want, I can touch base with ASUS and ask them what USB LTE modems are supported ?
