Have had a ASUS ax89x router for almost 18 months with no problems, until yesterday

The problem I have is the wan light went from normal white to red yesterday around 4pm

The set up I had was a Draytek Vigor 130 in bridge mode and a new Ethernet cable directly to the asus ax89x and before yesterday no issues no settings changed and no one was fiddling as I was home alone.

I have done some basic checking and if I connect the vigor 130 direct to a pc wired with Ethernet it works fine and can connect to the net but as soon as I plug the Ethernet cable into the router and turn it on the red wan light comes up and the app says the network cable is unplugged, so I turned modem and asus router off swapped Ethernet cable with 1 I know works and the same issue.

so to make sure it isn’t a modem issue I dug out my old isp router and connected it up direct to the same pc and again I can connect to the net and works fine including a speed test, but as soon as I hook up the wan Ethernet cable to modem it again a red wan light

i have factory reset the asus router with the app and again with the reset button on the back of the device and I still get the same issue

Now I use a synology nas and use the 10g spf+ Port I can connect to that and stream a film including 4k movies without an issue, transfer files to and from my pc and nas as well normal speeds

I have contacted asus but there is a roughly 48 hrs to wait for an email reply

was purchased on Amazon just under 18 months ago and have the receipt but was hoping someone would know what would cause the WAN to say an Ethernet cable is not attached when it is and works as it should?

Welcome, did you happen to make a backup of the configuration as that maybe a good first step.

If that fails, then a full factory reset (not software) is advisable, below should work.

It does sound like an ASUS issue rather than Vigor 130 and the red light on the WAN port I believe means that the device has no IP address or there’s no physical connection to the port.

ASUS router Hard Factory Reset for your model:

    1. Turn the router off.
    2. Press and hold the “WPS” button and turn the router on.
    3. Power light is on (keep holding the WPS button).
    4. Release the WPS button after the power LED light starts flashing.
    5. Power light stops flashing and the router will automatically reboot.

Thanks for the reply, I didn’t backup the configuration, I planned to do it but forgot about it as I wasn’t having any issues with the router until yesterday and had been around 17 months without a problem.

I did as requested and router was off then held the wps button, the white light came on far right side then began to flash.

I released the wps button and for a split second all lights were white and then blank and it sounded like it was rebooting, but 20 seconds later the red light came up, with the white light on the far right and about a minute later the lights came on as before.

Everything works on the Asus router except the WAN constantly red.

Currently I can use the Synology with the router to watch films and transfer files either way without a loss of speed but I am using the spf+ connection. if I want to download something I have to disable the Ethernet 1 (spf+) which connects to the router and use Ethernet 2 (on board motherboard RJ45) From the isp provider Router speeds are spot on and nothing out of the ordinary.

I spoke with my isp yesterday and they did some checks on my line and from their end they say there is no issue with my connection but because I don’t use their modem they can’t offer support lol

Does the logs suggest anything interesting after a reboot and make sure you are running latest firmware ?

    Version 3.0.0.4.386.47191

Are you are configuring the router via QiS Wizard (direct access to router) or using App  ?

Maybe worth a look at the DNS servers you are using and unplug any USB devices etc whilst trying to get the router back online ?

If DNS is automatic, change to Manual and use Cloudfares for testing – 1.0.0.1 and 1.1.1.1 for IPv4

The system is showing may 5th 2018 but that’s because it was a hard factory reset I think plus it’s not connecting to the net so won’t auto update the date

I will have to look into the date more as if the date hasn’t changed then it is possible the firmware may check the system date, and since the red light keeps coming up then the date will always be 2018

I have attached the log from the fresh hard factory reset with the wps button, I left it off for 16 hrs before coming home and checking for any reply’s here, hopefully it will help

The firmware the router is using is 3.0.0.4.386-47027   as a rule I wait about a month to see if there is any issues with latest update before I update the machine.

it is a fresh log, also I’m using the asus app to configure the router

Are you using DDNS and I did notice a couple of logs relating to kernel: [ 36.925688] eth0: PHY Link is down etc.

“ddns: WAN IP is empty” which may mean your issue is no WAN IP, ?

On main screen, (Network MAP) is there any IP Address listed ?

Try a couple more network cables just incase, and then change DNS settings and give the router a reboot.

Do you have any other old routers that you can test against your modem ?

Only other options are to apply latest firmware update and factory reset and build router from scratch (QiS), this time using PC/Laptop  (not app) as I have seen in the past the App can be troublesome sometimes.

If that does not work, screen dump you WAN > Internet Connection page so we can have a look

Note: for reference, just dug out my RT-AC86U and powered On, even with an Ethernet cable plugged into WAN port and the other end not plugged into anything, the RT-AC86U still reports ‘The Network Cable is Unplugged’

Maybe you have to accept that the WAN-port has gone for good.
Either due to overvoltage oder something else.

You can have a look at the pins, are they all 8 straight up and parallel inside the socket?

I’m currently using a  talk talk router to use online, I have disabled the Wi-Fi on it last night and tried to connect it through to the asus router but I get the same red light on the WAN

I was going to look online and see if I can get the talktalk router into modem mode only but only got in an hour ago, that’s why I liked the vigor 130 it’s just a modem nothing special just a single port modem

Here are a couple of pics of the WAN/Internet Connection page

    https://postimg.cc/HJb6F5y0
    https://postimg.cc/4KXcNh0Q

Also the WAN itself looks fine but uploaded a pic to be sure

    https://postimg.cc/JH3DLrQ2

Going  to try and hard reset and use the QIS as I can login as you see from the pics of WAN page.

I’m having an issue using Ethernet connected to a pc to connect to my router and only been able to use wireless iPhone or iPad to log in using safari

Port and Pins looking good, probably internal chip failure.

On the above link it shows the WAN has an up address

    https://postimg.cc/NybNkX2d

Above link is of my LAN

Also tried a couple of other Ethernet cables and same results

That’s when I connect to the router with it’s Wi-Fi, if I use the talk talk OEM router it won’t work and just spins the wheel, but as mentioned I have to check how to disable the router part and just use as a modem

    It’s a SageMCom fast 5364

So the ASUS AX89X settings look good, try the QiS and also change DNS settings (Connect to DNS Server automatically) to No and use 1.0.0.1 and 1.1.1.1

If having access problems to router via Laptop browser, try changing PC/laptop IP address to 192.168.50.10

Change Network adapter Settings: Section 2

    https://www.asus.com/uk/support/FAQ/1000814/

If the above does not work, then very likely a hardware issue with ASUS AX89X

I managed to get into my router account by using another base unit that uses the 10G base Connector to the router and i used the 192.168.50.1 to login to Firefox browser</p>
I have just taken another pic if you look at Ethernet Ports it’s all showing unplugged except the 10G base-T which is what I’m using to connect to the router, with base unit.

The sfp+ connects directly to the Synology nas server and I’m watching a film and can access the whole server no problem but the system says it is unplugged?
