As the DSL-AC88U contains the Broadcom (BCM) 63138 modem chipset, which supports both VDSL2, G.INP and the currently being tested by BT Open Reach G.fast, I have provided a short guide on how to configure the DSL-AC88U to work as a modem (Bridge Mode)
The DSL-AC88U supports bridge mode, but does not support VLAN ID (802.1q) whilst in bridge mode, the VLAN ID has to be handled by the connecting router .
Login to ASUS Router User Interface (UI)
Go to Advanced Setting > WAN > WAN Type – Select DSL/Ethernet (VDSL) for FTTC Connections
PVC Setting > WAN Connection Type – Select Bridge
Enable WAN Radial Button – YES
802.1q > Enable – Select NO (VLAN ID does not work for Bridge mode)In a completely sane world, madness is the only freedom (J.G.Ballard).

February 5, 2024 at 7:15 pm #30409Hello,
I have been using Asus DSL AC88U modem with a VDSL subscription for a long time. Today, after many years, I decided to buy a router for the first time. I purchased the Asus GT BE98 model, which I really liked the features of, even though it’s a bit expensive but I definitely wanted to get it. I have never used a router before, but I have some understanding of how it works. Today, when I tried to make the connections, I encountered a problem, which is that it simply does not work in Bridge mode. I suspect that the issue may be more related to the DSL AC88U modem I am using. However, I wanted to ask here to make sure.
Normally, just changing the connection type to Bridge should have been enough. Then, by entering the PPPoE settings on the router connected to the Lan1 port and entering the username and password, it should have worked. However, the router does not seem to get the Wan IP in any way in this mode.
After doing some research, I learned that the DSL AC88U does not support VLAN ID in Bridge mode, even though it appears to be enabled in the settings. My ISP needs this to be with the value of 35. This modem has not received updates for years. Could the problem be entirely due to this? During the router setup, I activated the special ISP settings section in the advanced settings and entered ’35’ in the VID section, but the result did not change. I also don’t have another cheap VDSL modem on hand to try.
I can’t make up my mind about what to do. I think the modem I’m using should support VLAN in Bridge mode, and despite being a supposedly advanced modem, it doesn’t.
I can try two things:
- Buy a cheap Zyxel or TPLink modem and put it in Bridge mode, which would be an expensive solution.
- Try to find someone who has a modem that I can borrow, but that is a bit less likely at the moment. I don’t know anyone close by who can help me on this.
A third solution would be that my ISP keeps calling me and saying that the fiber line has reached our building and they want to change the infrastructure. Maybe I can do that, and their modem will come for free. I hope that fiber modems have a properly functioning Bridge feature. Though my speed won’t change because the infrastructure doesn’t support high fiber speed on our street yet.
I wanted to hear if there is anything you think I haven’t tried. Thank you.

February 5, 2024 at 8:25 pm #30412Welcome, Yes you are correct, the ASUS DSL-AC88U does not support VLAN ID when in Bridge mode.
But as you are using the ASUS GT BE98 try setting VLAN ID as per below details from a LAN/WAN connection setting via IPTV, never tried this myself so will be an interesting test
(Try Internet option)
Hopefully your ASUS GT BE98 has the IPTV tab, the ASUS GT BE98 is a new release router so firmware maybe not be fully mature yet ?

February 5, 2024 at 8:41 pm #30417Thank you for the reference. Yes I have those exact settings on my router’s admin page. In Dual Wan I can select the Primary WAN as 10G WAN or 2.5G WAN / LAN1. I think I should select the port where I’m connecting the ethernet cable coming from the modem. In may case it’s 10G WAN.
I just don’t understand why the ISPs require the VAN ID if it is related with IP TV. I’m not using it and I don’t have a subscription for IP TV either. But it looks like it’s still needed to enter I guess.
I’ll try to do whatever you say. But my wife is watching something from Apple TV :) I can’t stop the internet. I’ll try a little later. But if it doesn’t work, do you think it’s most probably due to lack of the DSL AC88U’s VAN Id support in bridge mode?

February 5, 2024 at 8:44 pm #30418I do, most ISP’s require a dedicated VLAN ID just for Internet access and then other VLAN ID’s for streaming etc.
Use the 10G WAN and give it a try when you can and let us know as using the IPTV work around for VLAN ID should work

February 5, 2024 at 9:01 pm #30419February 5, 2024 at 9:03 pm #30420Oh one more question which I don’t understand very much. Now my modem is connected directly with PPPoe. And my router is gaining automatic ip from the modem and that’s how I’m using the internet via my router. So in order to make this setup work, the DHCP server has to be enabled in the modem’s settings. When we switch to Bridge, does it matter whether the DHCP server is enabled or disabled in the modem? Which one is better?

February 5, 2024 at 9:16 pm #30421When the DSL-AC88U is in Bridge mode, the DHCP setting on the DSL-AC88U does not matter, but best to disable DHCP Server on the DSL-AC88U and let your new ASUS GT BE98 manage all DHCP server settings etc.

February 5, 2024 at 10:44 pm #30422February 5, 2024 at 11:47 pm #30424I think the possibilities are either the GT BE98’s firmware is not mature as you said or the DSL AC88U’s malfunctioning due to that lack of VLan support in bridge mode. I don’t know if there is anything I didn’t try

February 6, 2024 at 6:08 am #30427Are you on the latest ASUS GT-BE98 Firmware version 3.0.0.6.102_33570 firmware ?
Did you manage to gain access to the IPTV settings page/tab ?
Can we see how you configured IPTV for Internet ?
Seems you are not receiving an IP address from WAN, Is WAN internet connection type Automatic in your country (see next reply) ?

Yes I found the latest firmware and downloaded manually. The check button was showing me I had the latest firmware but I found this firmware in this forum and downloaded it.
Yes IPTV settings is in the LAN settings. I accessed there and made the following changes as shown in the picture:
I’m also attaching the settings in Wan. but as you see in the picture 6.png, the internet connection is shown as disconnected.
In the next post I’ll send you how I could connect with my Modem to the internet. All the settings will be shown.
Edit: I attached another 6.jpg file. The previous one was a large file.

February 6, 2024 at 9:32 am #30448So in this post you can see my DSL AC88U settings.
8 and 9 shows how I can make a PPPoE connection directly from my modem. And 10 shows what I change to try to connect with my router so I put the modem in bridge mode in 10.

February 6, 2024 at 9:55 am #30452So I switched the modem back to PPPoE and now connecting to my modem via the router with Automatic IP setting. I’ll wait for some comments and other suggestions to try. Also I applied for Fiber Internet. I think they’ll bring the Fiber modem in a few days and I’ll get rid of the AC88U modem and use the Fiber. I hope my bridge connection attempts go better with a newer Fiber modem.
I’m also attaching the system log of my router. I don’t know if there is any clue why I couldn’t get the Wan IP. The recent ones (with the dates 6 Feb) should be the ones after I switched the modem back to PPPoE and connected the router with Automatic IP mode.
