So more as a reminder for myself, but I thought I would share my ASUS Routers IPv6 Settings for reference.

    Note:

    • In UK, BT uses the 56 WAN prefix length for IPv6 (DSL)
    • Make sure Modem supports IPv6 /56
    • Make sure Service Provider can offer IPv6, many don’t (Plusnet) etc.
    • My settings show an IPv4 and IPv6 dual stack

A few screen dumps of my ASUS RT-AC86U running ASUSWRT-Merlin Firmware for ref.

Hopefully useful for others also in UK

To check if the ASUS router is allowing Clients (wired or wireless) to receive IPv6 addresses try the following:

From a Windows Client (PC-Laptop) go to CMD.exe (Windows Command Prompt) and type IPCONFIG, the resulting should be simular to below (I have partially hidden some of my IPv6 / IPv4 addresses) etc.

I have BT FTTP and have my settings are the same apart from the NAT Type that’s Symmetric. I can’t find an answer online on what the difference is with BT Broadband. does it make a difference from Fullcone or Symmetric when using BT? thanks

The above describes how to configure IPv6 for use with an ASUS router.

NAT (Network Address Translation) is an IPv4 tool that is not used in most IPv6 deployments and probable not needed if you have configured yours simular to above.

    FYI:

Great reference on Wiki regarding NAT types, but in essence no real difference apart from Symmetric could be considered safer but Full cone NAT can be better suited for certain types of online gaming etc.

Both NAT options work with BT as far as I am aware (I use BT VDSL2) and Fullcone is my NAT Type settings when using an ASUS router for Gaming.

Both FTTP and FTTC (PPPoE) will not impact upon NAT settings.
