I have come across an issue that I am not sure is a quirk or a bug. I first thought was something to do with ipv6 and accessing the iOS app but after further investigation it appears to be the refresh of the ddns IP address.
We have FTTP and when the ONT is switched off or if its drops we get a new IP address from BT both Ipv4 and Ipv6 nothing too unusual about that but when the XT8 is back online with the new IP address this information isn’t sent to the DDNS servers so when accessing the app when not on wifi it has “unable to reach” as the status. I have also checked the the ddns name to lookup it has the previous IP address on https://iplookup.asus.com/nslookup.php
The question is how does the new ip address details get sent to asuscomm.com ?
The current work around is to open the iOS app with wifi on and pull down to refresh a few times that then updates but not sure how that would work if I am not on the network as that would then prevent remote access.
I have attached a couple of screen shots from the app that has the old ip address.
DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) is a service that allows network clients to connect to the wireless router, even with a dynamic public IP address, through its registered domain name. The wireless router is embedded with the ASUS DDNS service and other DDNS services.
Your thinking is correct, in theory ASUS routers have an embedded DDNS client to update your No-IP hostname automatically.
What I cannot remember is if this service works when you use the asuscomm.com domain for DDNS as I seem to remember a while ago a few issues (limitations) ?
Try changing Server to Domains.Google.com (registration required) and then select ‘WAN IP and hostname verification’ check box to every 60 minutes and see if that does the trick

I had only the Remote Access Config enabled from Administration > System that did allow the app to work remotely with DDNS but I think this is more passive so only updates when the app is connected to the AX8 and updates the latest WAN settings so if the IP address changes in the meantime it doesn’t update the app when it try’s to connect remotely.
I have now turned on the DDNS Client in WAN > DDNS and switched off the FFTP ONT to generate a new IP address and the app did reconfigure over 4G to connect. The guidance on this page though is somewhat confusing or I am reading it wrong;
‘The host name is successfully registered. You can use “[hostname].asuscomm.com” to access the service in home network from WAN. Use “[hostname].asuscomm.com” to remotely access your network.Go to Advanced Settings > WAN to configure the port forwarding or DMZ settings to allow other WAN clients to remotely access your network. If you want to remotely configure the wireless router, go to here.’
As I only want to configure remotely the router I’m not sure if I need the DDNS setting on or off as the remotely configure the wireless link mentioned above takes you back to Administration > System > Remote Access Config which is what I only had originally on.
I have put the question to ASUS regarding DDNS and Automatic WAN IP address update and asuscomm.com , so hopefully they will respond
DDNS is ideally needed if you are doing any form of access from the Internet unless you have a fixed (WAN) IP address.
DDNS etc. allows access (clients) to your Domain / LAN etc, enabling ‘Administration > System > Remote Access Config’ basically allows administrative traffic/access to go via WAN for Remote Config etc, where as if you was sitting on your Lan and accessed the administration control panel from administration purposes, this would be done via LAN.
A while ago, ASUS did have the issue that when using the Asus Router mobile app and DDNS service was enabled, this automatically enabled Remote Access Configuration also, that was quickly changed

Thanks very much for your support. I am back home Friday so will be able to send the logs and will add comments and reference you on the feedback it is ASUS one for the DDNS
No problem, let us know when you do send feedback so I can let ASUS know etc.

I have just submitted the feedback and mentioned you at the top of the form :) I have had to submit 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 feedback forms so they should have two feedback forms titled as configuration issue and DDNS as the secondary I have provided the same email address for here.
@uk-sentinel Thanks again! Perfect, I will let ASUS know immediately

@uk-sentinel I have been getting a few odd emails from ASUS support since I submitted the DDNS feedback and logs. The latest one that I’ve attached is about the username and password even though I have no issues with my username and password and the previous one was about having an incorrect time zone. The time is correct and I use the U.K. NPL time server 139.143.5.30 I double checked and any entry log created is logged with the correct time so no ideas what they are thinking is wrong.
Had a look at attachment and agree with yourself , I assume they are just working thru the basics with yourself, maybe worth sending an email back to them and say all done and still problem ?
If any further ‘odd’ emails, let me know and I will Have a chat with them
