Hi all,
So I use McAfee for AV and not had any real issues so far. Anyway, mine is due to run out shortly and I was originally going to buy another of the same version (cheaper to buy new as oppose to renew), however I noticed they have a McAfee+ now….
https://www.mcafee.com/en-gb/index.html
The Ultimate I thought was only US but its on the UK site so I presume its now available here. Main reason for considering the Ultimate is that it provides Full-Service for online account clean up & personal data clean up. My understanding is the Full-Service means they will take care of removing your data from whoever has it for you as opposed to say Advanced which will Scan for online account clean up and give you the info but it is then down to you to go and find out how to get your data removed from that site/company.
As there has been numerous data leaks by various companies/providers etc, I’m wondering if this is worth doing just for a year as its a bit costly but may help remove junk mail etc also? I’m considering the family plan as might as well use it for parents email account etc to check there details etc. Again only for 1 year, will cancel it prior to renewal as certainly not paying the renewal price, I figure they can sort any issues out in a year and then I can go back to normal AV protection after that, especially as now using a password manager etc.
I have in the past got random emails and they have links to unsubscribe and most I ignore as you know the unsubscribe doesn’t work and takes you to yet another rando site etc but a few have been ones were I’ve been to a site and it has signed me up to something but then the unsubscribe doesn’t work so you still get the emails so I’ve had to resort to blocking the address etc.
What do you think of this? Reading reviews, quiet a few people have rated it pretty well, apparently Norton does a similar product but more expensive I believe.
Wont keep it every year but thinking it might be worth it for a year as can have unlimited devices and but the clean-up is limited to 2 adults only, not sure if they multiple email address. In the example it says to give Hotmail, Gmail, etc email but I’m hoping they accept emails from own domain names etc too as would default the purpose as I typically use Hotmail/Gmail for places which require me to sign up for something but I only intend to use it once, that way I don’t get more junk on my main email :) A typical one is some car websites, you want to view the brochure, you have to enter a email before you can download them…
Also, looks to be a deal on the price atm.
Thanks
Kev

November 16, 2023 at 7:55 pm #28087Is that the offer for £74.99 and then renews at £159.99.
Generally, any way to remove your digital footprint online is a great way to reduce exposure to all sorts of unplanned exploits and annoyances.
These type of packages also use Password managers which offer great flexibility.
For £70 ish sounds like a great idea and investment if this is something that worries you.
Don’t forget to disable auto-renewal if you decide to purchase .

November 16, 2023 at 9:29 pm #28088I wish was £74.99 – the Ultimate is £134.99/yr, renews at £264.99.. hence why I certainly wont be renewing :)
I thought that link went straight to the table showing the different version, if you click the link above, go to Pick my plan button on the right, it will then show you the table and prices…

November 17, 2023 at 1:57 pm #28095The Family Plan, I missed that …
£134.99 for first year is a tad pricey, not saying its good value considering what the package offers.
For £70 this would have been something I would have considered, but at £134 not so sure.

November 17, 2023 at 2:13 pm #28098Yes, I’m on the fence with it tbh – one one hand IF it does find my email addresses and pswds have been leaked and they can get them removed then perfect, might stop any potential issues down the line and get my details removed so not still out there somewhere BUT if it doesn’t find they have been then wasn’t a need to use it. A lot of pswds now I’ve changed due to pswd manager but even though they would still have my email which ideally I’d sooner remove to stop unwanted emails etc.
Hence why I’m kind of trying to justify it by considering doing it for 1 year only just to effectively get my info removed from wherever it may be held.
Incidentally, I got a email yesterday funnily enough from Samsung to say they had cybersecurity incident on 13th Nov 2023 that affected my details as I bought a product between 1st July 2019 – 30 June 2020 ( over 3 years ago). Apparently pswd or financial info not impacted.
No action needed by me other than to be on lookout of unexpected emails asking for info etc.

November 17, 2023 at 2:24 pm #28100I tend to rotate passwords and email addresses regularly on all the important areas such as Banks, Credit cards, Utilities and Online Shopping etc.
I also ensure my Wallet is RFID blocker and take a general approach to a lot of areas including shredding paper docs etc.
A numbers game, but no harm in changing the odds in your favour

November 17, 2023 at 2:56 pm #28102Yes agree, I don’t change email addresses I do have a shredder for paper stuff but in recent years I’ve moved a lot of that to online only to try stop the mail through the door and endless paper building up etc. My shredder isn’t the security lvl 4 or 5 they recommend to cut into minute pieces but mine does micro cut so not too bad. Cost of the recommended ones are a bit price and not sure can justify for personal use.
I need to at some point download my statements but I tend not to bother too much now as I can view bank info online so i can see transactions so don’t really need statement as I’ll know if a unknown transaction happened sooner than I get the statement to show it.

November 17, 2023 at 3:12 pm #28103Let us know if you do opt for the McAfee+ package as will be interesting to see how this works from a user perspective and how much data is actually out there ?

November 17, 2023 at 3:33 pm #28104November 18, 2023 at 7:23 am #28123FYI: There are a few free (ish) type services out there, maybe worth putting you email address in the below and this will give you a quick summary of personal data exposure etc.
I tested my main email and no data breaches found and then I tested an older email address which I know had been leaked in the past and there was an alert about personal data exposures (a few years ago).

November 18, 2023 at 7:47 pm #28126Thanks – I tried it, it seems most of my emails are ok, 1 has 8 breaches and 1 has 4. However, it doesn’t show the full email so difficult to tell what it is for. Also the pswds are mostly * out so can’t tell from the pswd what it was for and no website mentioned.
Only 1 I recognise which was twitter in 2021 and I’ve changed pswd since then, suspect they had a leak too.
One is showing 6th Nov so I’m wondering if that was maybe the Samsung one?
Shame it doesn’t’ give you the website then I could at least check it and update/close etc

November 18, 2023 at 8:03 pm #281278 breaches on one email address, that seems high and worth ensuring PW are changed where possible – Yes if they offered you the website, there would be no need to register and them profit from the data
But at least you now have a better idea of your exposure on the dark web etc .

November 19, 2023 at 7:57 am #28131Thanks, all the pswds look to be old passwords as not used in ages but just can’t be sure what websites are to remove account(s) as I don’t use the passwords at all. I can only assume data has been leaked from various places.

November 19, 2023 at 8:28 am #28133So was just going to sign up to the 14 day trial with Aura to see if it gave me more info but it wont take my address, it wants a state and only lists US states and also wont accept post code as wants 5 digits only so appears its only for US residents?

November 19, 2023 at 8:44 am #28134Does sound sensible in that passwords are old, so not used anymore and not a real problem.
But there is always that one account that does get forgotten
