Moved Topic!
I may change out to a draytek modem or something, The DSL-AC88U doesn’t even support BTs IPv6.
Trendy paperweight
Haha yep, and the fact I have two of them… good job the first one was free, but that should have taught me a lesson not to get a new one!
hi chris i just started using the draytek 167 and its super stable but i dont think it got gfast but i think 165 have it my new system is a dream to work with running 167 in modem mode conected to a pfsence appliance to a zyxel switch but if u only got 3 hardwires including ap then u can skip a switch for wifi im using a unifi wifi6ap best upgrade i ever made
Yeah I was just quickly looking at the ones that support G.fast 160+ range seem to and state support for the 900mb down profiles (in my dreams).
I’m currently in the process of setting my network up from scratch again, I’m using the DSL-AC88U as the modem main router with DHCP and then an Asus RT-AX82U as an access point, is this the best way to go about it? I was originally using the WAN port on the 2nd router to LAN 1 on the primary, should I use LAN to LAN instead as it’s a home network and I’d like everything to be on the same connection / to communicate with each other

April 25, 2022 at 9:16 pm #18796What are you looking for from you home network, just general internet browsing, streaming, gaming, parental controls, wifi vs ethernet connections etc. and how big is the property ?
and most important question, any budget constraints

April 25, 2022 at 9:45 pm #18802Just saw you created a new thread but the reply has been moved to its own – feel free to delete it I’ll repost here.
Right now at this moment reliable connection and FTTP please, haha..
Basically the way I’ve always ran is a Main modem/router at the master socket at the centre of the house, this runs a 2.4G network for older devices, and some wired devices running off it to the left side of the house, then a wired secondary router one room over (roughly 20 feet) the “primary” activity room with multiple wired devices, and 5G network running off this one. I’m also using a single pihole as my DNS server – was originally two and will be added back at some point.
The secondary router ideally is where the gaming, heavy streaming and most bandwidth is used. The primary router is just for legacy devices and a Sky Q mini box in the living room.
Budget isn’t too much of an issue if it’s going to last me a long time like my trusty Netgear Nighthawks did before I moved to G.fast. I’d like to avoid wireless extension type set ups, and overkill “GAMINGGGGGG” routers, you know the ones I mean, Slap Xbox or playstation compatible on it and people will buy it for £399
I’ll knock up a rough sketch.

April 25, 2022 at 10:22 pm #18803What an absolute masterpiece if I do say so myself, haha. This is the basic gist of it. Havent had any coverage issues or bandwidth issues as its just 2 of us here, and its a good job anyway cause the QoS on the DSL-AC88U is…. lacking to say the best.

haha cheers, Yeah its in AP mode running a Merlin fork, forgot to mention that. I’ve got a spool of CAT 6A and connectors on its way tomorrow, and a few meters of Cat 7 just to check it out I’m going to sort things out and buy a proper switch like you mention.
I’ve also just noticed the BT Wholesale checker is available to use again.. This is out of my control by the looks of things if you compare these two images.

April 26, 2022 at 12:14 am #18815Oh yeah Im planning to. Only dilemma is I’m actually due for FTTP in this quarter from DI – BEunlimited. They’re touching areas openreach won’t. They were out in the street a couple weeks ago measuring up from the telephone pole, I said jokingly you giving me fibre? and he said Yep thats the plan. I Was like oh sweet jesus haha. So I’ll probably invest in things like cabling and the switch, and keep the Asus / homehub instead of forking out for something to use for 2-3 months (hopefully).

If only
As you only have a few months before FTTP etc, I totally understand no point in purchasing kit for short term usage.
When you do finally get FTTP, the DSL-AC88U could be replaced by the RT-AX82U, would that cause any issues with Wifi from a central location ?
With current set-up, your Gaming will be laggy as hell, as you say, DSL-AC88U QoS is rubbish and ideally QoS needs to be established from where the DSL-AC88U currently resides , via RT-AX82U or simular.
Note: I am no expert, but I believe once Broadband speeds exceed 400 Mbps, then QoS is no longer needed and Using ASUS AP rather than AiMesh means you have less options available for AP, (Guest wifi etc)
So maybe an option if wifi signal strength is an issue to purchase a second ASUS RT router when FTTP arrives and bin the DSL-AC88U.
Nice diagrams @Chris and @torment

April 26, 2022 at 1:42 pm #18822It’s actually not bad the way it is right now, never had a problem gaming or anything, im pretty much the only user for heavy traffic. my dad just does generic internet browsing, and then I’m the only other person on the network, The network itself is fine apart from the dsl drops as of recent.
I spoke to BT About an hour ago. he counted the resyncs and couldn’t wrap his head around it, he didn’t know what line attenuation and SNR was so he went straight to booking an engineer. I said let me try some more things before that stage (gonna have to run the homehub for a little while which is gonna be nice setting up static IPs alllllll over again).
he could see my line had an observed down speed of 240 and 35 up at one previous point just a few weeks ago, but was showing 160/27 to him now. I feel like DLM has lowered my profile band.
Then gave me the “well your speed guarantee is 150mb so there’s not a problem really.” Well there is when I’ve been running fine over 200mb down for 2 years and now this with constant line drops and you want to charge me more in a month when my contract ends to give me a lower service that’s not even reliable. Pffft yeah right.

April 26, 2022 at 3:48 pm #18824Diplomacy usually yields the greater rewards, enjoy your HH
When you speak with BT next, don’t worry about the throughput – concentrate on the disconnects as this when fixed (hopefully) will encourage DLM to increase synch rate over time !

April 27, 2022 at 7:09 am #18834Well I actually spoke to amazon, as the DSL-AC88U was under 12 months old, they’ve refunded me for it and I’ll be getting a Draytek 2766AC (G.fast and FTTP compatible which is why I went for it, considering it was the same price as what I paid for the DSL-AC88U it seems like a win win)
It’ll be delivered today with a Zyxel Switch. Just waiting on a crimping tool to come as well and looks like I’ll have a busy day ahead. I’m still going to run the HH I think for a short time and then contact bt again to arrange an engineer.

Definitely the best option to get underlying issue fixed
