    Hi all,

So I’m considering potentially getting a new nvme drive to place in 2nd slot, only issue is it sits right under the gfx card, I thought my new one would be slightly smaller but alas not.

So I been looking and WD Black SN850X 4TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME was one I saw as ideally I want to to replace my 4TB HDD, still a bit pricey so will likely hold off and see if prices come down but I noticed the 1TB and 2TB versions all have Heatsink options but the 4TB one doesn’t, it just comes with no heatsink.  Would this be ok without a heatsink or should I look to get a 3rd party heatsink to fit on it? MB only has one heatsink which I’m using for the C drive, oddly the 2nd port doesn’t have one.

I’m not sure I can fit the NVMe & a heatsink under the gfx card tbh, will be very tight.

Or should I look to get a NVMe add-on card and put the NVMe card on that add-on card, albeit more expensive?

It will be used for data storage mostly, might have the odd game on it but not much and I can still place on C drive in worst case, although C drive isn’t as big, only 512GB.

    Thanks

    Kev

Instead of NVMe add-on card, take a look at an PCIe SSD Extention Card

I am sure they come in different sizes / lengths etc.

    Would this fit ?

Here is a pic of my MB, as you can see only 1 heatsink.  The gfx card sits in the silver/black slot and overhangs where the 2nd NVMe slot. So if i got a extension, I’m not sure if it would work as very little height for the cable to go plus means finding somewhere to fix the actual NVMe drive it in the case.

Also can’t move the gfx card to the bottom slot as then the card has no room before the side of the case (tried that with my previous card and was a no go).

    So a couple of suggestions.

    1. when graphics card was moved to bottom slot, if the graphics car was rotated 180 degrees, would that work if so you could purchase a suitable – ‘LANE REVERSAL ADAPTER’ or similar.
    2. with the graphics card in its current slot, if a simple Graphic Expansion Riser Adapter was added which would give you a little more room underneath, would this be enough given any restrictions with the PC case for height etc ?

So if I got a gfx card riser, wouldn’t that make the card too high that it wouldn’t screw into the bracket at the back f the case?

Maybe, alas no idea what your PC case may have regarding securing GPU to case and whether this is adjustable.

What is PC make and model (chassis) as I can have a quick look tomorrow and see if any options are available

SO just looked at my case again….. So the issue with the bottom pcie slot is that there jumpers that i lug cables into wont fit under the gfx card so can’t out the card there…. I found a bracket type thing i could use to fold the card BUT it would be tight near the psu and also a cable coming through I’d have to try reroute so doesn’t look like a option using the flexible extension cable for gfx.

For the NVME extension, I’m not sure as the cable would need to fit in and then effective double back on itself to be fixed in the drive cages behind it, if can find a folder for it but that’s looking like realistic only option, will see if can find some where else in case to fix it but not sure atm.

2nd pcie is only gen 3 but I don’t thing WD do a gen 3 4TB drive so would have to be the 850x model and that’s price hence waiting for it to come down..

Interesting, does seem tight in your PC chassis

I was thinking of a ‘Vertical Graphics Card Holder Bracket GPU Mount kickstand’ type of workaround.

But not the anti-sag option, a full bracket and cheaper options are available elsewhere but unsure if it would work for your case.

I can’t tell how that actually fits in the case :(

I saw this, any mileage in ths or they not that good? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adapter-Converter-4x32Gbps-Internal-Expansion/dp/B09DKQ5N3K/ref=sr_1_37?crid=3UUREOBCOS3IL&keywords=icy+dock+nvme+pcie&qid=1704731700&sprefix=icy+dock+nvme+pcie%2Caps%2C53&sr=8-37

Great idea if your motherboard supports 16 lane pci-e slot on the motherboard and a bios that accepts x4x4x4x4 settings.

I don’t think your ASUS MB supports the Bios option, but worth checking yourself on your PC just incase

ah i think it needs bifurification which my MB doesn’t have, maybe a card which will take 1 NVMe will work ok?

    1 NVMe should be fine
