October 29, 2023 at 4:16 pm #27776Got a msg on Hugo app – it seems in summary – Wholesale energy prices increased 30-40% so is unlikely to be any cheaper deals in Oct as it was expected to be.
So expects a increase in prices in Jan.
Person writing has now switched to So energy on a fixed deal and Elec is fixed until later in 2024.
Appears so energy is only supplier providing open market switching tariffs.
Bit of a surprise that, appears i picked a reasonable supplier after all, was wondering if I’d made a mistake fixing for 1 year lol

October 29, 2023 at 6:15 pm #27778So Energy for Fixed tariff does sound like a safe option.
I did read A pipeline running under the Baltic Sea earlier this month caused a scare in the gas market, so I was interested to see if that had effected my Tracker rate yet.
I will keep plotting my monthly Unit prices for Gas and Electric to see if this reported 40% increase in Wholesale energy prices is reflected via my Tracker either end of this year or early next year.
In theory, even if price is higher for 3 months or so, for the remaining 9 months prices could be lower, this is where tracker tariff could add value, or not.

Bear in mind that the tracker prices change daily not monthly, and do seem to vary quite a bit.ย It’s still been consistently below the price cap figures every day though, so a large saving overall.

November 25, 2023 at 1:58 pm #28210Hi, How you getting on with your tracker @UK Sentinel? Still working out ok or did you switch to a fixed rate tariff?
I’m on my fix till June net year so will re-evaluate then but I hear rumours prices will go up 5% in Jan. As I’m paying a bit more than the DD amount they set up for me, I’m hoping they don’t change my DD and I’ll be covered by what I’m paying as I am paying a little above recommended and so far have just over ยฃ100 credit on my account but I suspect this will soon disappear as it gets colder. Each month so far I’m using a few quid less than my DD so hence been building up the credit.ย Not to mention, I don’t always give a gas reading so they estimate and last time I did, I got a nice bit of credit as I was using around 2 months less gas than they predicted as was summer time so hence no heatig on etc:)

November 25, 2023 at 5:10 pm #28214Over the Summer the Tracker proved to offer great value, have not checked since last month and will add it to my list for next week, but I assume as demand is increasing, Unit price will increase also, but so far very impressed with the value a Tracker type tariff offers.
Not sure if Octopus offer a daily unit price cost-per-unit for reference for their Tracker, so will have a look next week unless @Superhands can add input

November 25, 2023 at 5:33 pm #28215Do you mean like historical unit prices for the tracker? This is the one I normally check ย https://mysmartenergy.uk/Tracker/Southern-England
thereโs also a helpful 3rd party app octopus compare it can pull your usage data via the octopus api and it will compare your exact hourly usage against the other tariffs and tell you if youโd spent more or less and during which times of day it was more or less expensive (if comparing tariffs that change hourly).
The octopus tracker is the best one for me by a long shot, Iโve saved so much this year and itโs always been cheaper than the price cap/fix. ย I donโt mind temporarily paying higher prices at times during the winter if the wholesale goes up as <!–more–>long as I benefit straight away from it going back down again. On the whole fixed tariffs will usually cost more as they have to bake hedging into the tariff cost too which they donโt have to do with tracker.

November 25, 2023 at 6:04 pm #28217Yes, the https://mysmartenergy.uk/Tracker/Southern-Englandย gives exactly what I was looking for in terms of daily Unit Prices in a graphical representation for Octopus Gas and Electric

Whats the Horizontal Orange line, does that represent the equivalent Capped price ?

November 25, 2023 at 6:30 pm #28218Yeah indeed thatโs the comparative ofgem price cap. Feel sorry for all those stuck on that all year when there is a better way

November 25, 2023 at 8:32 pm #28219It is interesting the price margins and potential savings.
FYI: Just logged into my Octopus Energy Account and Gas Unit Rate reading from Octopus matches exactly with the above mysmartenergy.uk tracker, the Electric was slightly different, but very very marginal
Will be interesting to watch every month as to whether at any point the Tracker Unit price rate actually meets that of the ย Ofgem price cap – especially Gas ?

November 25, 2023 at 8:45 pm #28222Are you in the southern region?ย if not if you check the menu at the top for tracker you can select the other regions which may account for the slight difference in prices.ย I’m in that region and the prices to match exactly the ones in the app for me
