Hi all,
So have a grey round Michelin tyre inflator for a number of years, forget when I got it, but recently when using it inflates a bit and then says error and turns off. Turning back on, it then will restart but may error again. Also I’ve noticed when it is running it may say like 28… 28.5,,,, 28… 28.5… 29… 29.5.. 29.. 29.5.. I’ve had a quick look online and it is suspect that the gauge/sensor in the tyre inflator is faulty and would need sending off for repair. Now I’ve probably had this a good 10+ years, maybe even 15 years or more.. I just don’t recall when I bought it.
So I’ve been looking and I was going to get the Black Michelin tyre inflator which has a USB port for charging a phone for example and has another power socket on it but tbh I’m probably never ever going to use it for that and looking at reviews, the quick connect nozzle can be a issue and not work correctly on it and its a bit loud and doesn’t stand up very well it seems. So I’ve been looking at this one: Michelin Programmable Superfast 4X4/SUV Digital Tyre Inflator However, its for SUV/4×4 and I am wondering, will it do normal car tyres? Apparently according to reviews it has rubber feet so better standing up and bit less noise, also it inflates quicker. However, this is where it gets interesting.. it says it will inflate a 13″ tyre from flat in under 2mins.. now what 4×4/SUV has 13″ tyres??? It then also says adapters for inflating balls and other items. It says max PSI is 80, but what’s the minimum? will it do 30psi – 40psi as my car is typically 33-36/38psi I think depending inf under load etc.
Any advise? At the moment, my existing one does work (when not erroring) but I’m not sure i trust the readout as my one is programmable (like this new one) so i can set the pressure, turn on and it inflates and turns off at set pressure. I also bought a couple of quick release nozzles which screw into my inflator and then I connect to the car and works fine so prob best to use these as if go faulty, cheap to replace – got 2 on amazon for only a few quid and then got best of both worlds so to speak.
Reason for looking to buy is one of my tyres seems to be loosing pressure more than the rest, cannot hear any air coming out and not noticed anything in the wheel, had it checked either Nov/Dec last year at a garage and nothing found. Its really odd. They advised is probably due to temperature changes but if so, why just that one tyre? They are original tyres on the car so not as if some are newer than others etc. Also car was serviced towards end of Jan and tyres all reported ok, nothing detected in terns of nail etc. Friend of mine suggested getting the valve replaced but not sure as can’t hear anything coming out so not sure its the valve, I’m wondering if a very slow puncture somewhere but its so slight it it takes a while to loose pressure?
This was reading after car had been used the other day:-
Front left tyre = 38psi
Back Left tyre = 37psi
Front Right tyre = 36psi
Front back tyre = 26psi
Now car is front wheel drive so rears are effectively doing nothing and can’t see why the back left it dropping so much…. very odd, admittedly it takes few months to drop but it is noticeable after a while. I popped into local garage this morning and had then check all tyres, now they are :-
Front left tyre = 37psi
Back Left tyre = 38psi
Front Right tyre = 36psi
Front back tyre = 36psi
Will see how they go now but he handy to have own reliable inflator as not sure I trust my existing one, but could be used as a standby to inflate a bit if required.
Thanks
Kev

April 5, 2025 at 11:54 am #36754Absolutely, definitely sounds like your current Michelin tyre inflator is becoming unreliable and needs replacement.
Our family consists of four private cars and I tend to use a separate tyre pressure measuring gauge just to check tyre pressures and then get out the Air pump if needed.
The tyre pressure gauge is a little old but does have a handy feature to release air if you have over done it with the tyre Air inflator.
Most Digital tyre inflators go to a minimal of 1 bar (15 psi) so nothing to worry about in reality in terms of tyre pressures inflation rates, but definitely worth while keeping an eye on the rear tyre that keeps loosing pressure as this may be due to a faulty valve or nail in tyre etc.

April 5, 2025 at 11:58 am #36756Just had a thought, some cars say what you tyre pressures are (mine does) so maybe worth checking just incase ?

April 5, 2025 at 12:34 pm #36761Yes, my car tells me the above readings (even have the app which connects to the car and tells me). I have a manual pressure check also and the tyre inflator tells me the pressure when I connect the hose, i then press the + button to increase the display to the pressure I want and turn it on and it inflates to the set pressure and then cuts off. I believe the one above I mentioned does the same but is obviously newer so considering a purchase which I’ll still get a *small* amount of cash back :)
Thanks

April 5, 2025 at 1:11 pm #36762Worth noting, Michelin run a brand licensing scheme that allows other companies to sell products under the Michelin banner, longevity seems to be the main issues with these type of tyre inflators from Halfords.
But Cash-back is a positive

April 5, 2025 at 1:37 pm #36764Yeah, I can’t really complain too much at my old tyre inflator, admittedly not been used too much but has worked fine when needed until recently but it does have long periods just sitting around collecting dust lol. I believe my one is this one: Michelin Rapid 12262 Tyre Inflator – on Amazon it says unavailable but it says in details on page first available 2008, not sure if that’s first available on amazon in 2008 or if that’s when this inflator was available in general but as said, that’s over 15 years ago, assuming I bought it in 2008, which is a possibility as I just don’t recall when I got it.

April 5, 2025 at 3:58 pm #36772Not a new car, existing car lol Would love to change it but just can’t do it at the moment and I got the final payment due on this on very soon so going to have to pay it off and then see how things go, love to change it be realistically need to prob keep it another year or 2 before it may then be worth changing but not really got the funds to change it. Been looking at used cars, prices are not too bad but with the interest rates, you looking at 5 or 6k your pay in interest alone which then pumps the cost of the car up so not really viable. With the way work is at the moment, we never know what’s going on so once I paid this off at least it is one less monthly outlay so I can try save that money towards a replacement, only concern is I suspect I’ll only be able to save enough for a deposit on something newer, it wont be a reasonable sum to put in to the pay the rest of it off or to buy outright.
And all is not going to plan….. Placed my order online at Halfords, all went through, no issues, said ready to collect in approx. 1 hour from when I ordered and they keep it for 7 days so was going to collect tomorrow.
Short while ago, got a email saying Refund Receipt for £7.50+VAT total £9….., upon checking order status page, it shows order cancelled…. no explanation via email or on website, nothing. Been on there website chat, they are raising it to dedicated team and will get call within 48hrs. They too are unable to tell me why it was cancelled. I’m guessing they don’t have it in stock and I presume the refund is a manual process and they have entered the wrong amount…
I’ve asked them to email me as preference rather than a call as I’ll be busy to tomorrow and may miss the call, they have made a note so will see what happens. Hopefully they will just email, apologies and refund the remaining amount not like I have a query regarding a item I’ve collected and its faulty etc so should be straight forward when they look it up.
Good job I didn’t go down to collect it as suspect nothing would of been there to collect.
