Just before I jump in and buy something what is the Asus ax82u like ?
I cannot afford the expensive routers at the moment so it’s down to the Draytek 2862ac all in one or the Draytek 166 modem along with a used ax82u router or am I better off with a used ac-88u router.
Be nice to hear from someone who knows more about these than me !

Cheers in advance.
This is what I am trying to do. The Draytek 166 was recommended as a modem, don’t know if this is the best or if there are other options better ?
As for the router I though the As88u would be good until I read reviews and the AX88 seems recommended but it’s out of my price range at the moment.
I could get the Draytek 166 or similar then get a cheaper decent router that I could sell on when I can afford the AX88.
If I read things correctly the Draytek 166 works straight away with sky without needing your username/password. Unless I have picked things up wrong.
Any recommendations for a router ?

Problem at the moment is that the Asus AX88 is expensive. I see the AX82 is mentioned above and it is more affordable but it may be no good if it isn’t supported by merlin firmware.
Is this the same for the AX86 ?
Easy option at the moment would be to get the Draytek 2862AC used as a stop gap option.

It is certainly a massive upgrade from the 130 looking at the speeds.
£160 on Amazon is a cheap as anywhere but some appear to be Annexe B not the Uk A. Some stories about a gen 2 may be coming as well.
My mistake on the 88U, the AX models are still expensive but along with the 166 they would be great for when Ultra fast gets to me.
thanks, appreciated.

If using the RT-AC88U I presume you use the dsl cable into the modem then connect that via wan to the Asus 88U.
Would I use the modem or the 88U to log into Sky and would everything be connected to the 88U, Lan and WiFi ?
Sorry for the questions, never thought to do it this way.

I just use it for general use and streaming tv. My two sons game, one on the x box ( which uses all the bandwidth when it’s on for some reason ) while the other is a pc gamer, using a home plug.
At the moment the wi fi is using the sky q boxes as boosters but as far as I am aware if you use a third party modem/router they no longer work as boosters.
I also looked at the Asus Dsl ac68U as it has decent reviews. I don’t want to spend a fortune so was looking at nearly new ones.
Pity the the Asus dsl ac model you tested wasn’t going to be released here as that sounded good.

Their supplier modem/router ( SR203) has major dhcp faults and wireless devices regularly lose their signal.
I was going to use a 3rd party modem/router that can provide MER option 61 and until I found this post I was going to get an Asus Dsl ac88U which would be a direct swap.
Is there still issues with the Dsl ac88u and would I be better off with a Draytek 2862ac, TP Link vr2800 or maybe Billion 8900ax.
Is it just the memory loss that is the issue with the Asus or is it wi fi issues as well.
