Ping uses the ICMP protocol and is great for light touch testing of connected devices, but when you get into the realms of RTT ( Round-trip time ) maybe better to look at jitter testing which measures the fluctuation in latency.
Not sure if you have any Network based testing tools, if not I think you can still use SolarWinds on free trial to test jitter etc.
