As a complete newcomer to this, are there any specific advantages to moving to the custom firmware? Apologies if this question has been answered a thousand times.
Sensible choice. ASUSWRT-Merlin offers stock firmware that has been improved upon to add extra functionality (options)
ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware offers extra options for VPN routing and custom scripts as well as tweaks in other areas including for instance a temperature module so you can see how hot the CPU is getting.
If you are new to routers, maybe wise to stick with stock firmware, at least in the short term
