Does the XT8 support WiFi 6e clients?

I’m about to replace my laptop and all the latest models I’m looking at have WiFi 6e connectivity.ย  Both me and the laptop are old :-) and I am not tech savvy.

    Many thanks!

No it doesn’t support 6E. That would likely be for the backhaul only though, so those devices would most likely be connecting on the 5GHz band anyway?

Wifi 6E is backward compatible with routers that support older standards, but will only connect at the maximum rate supported by the router. So while XT8 doesn’t support Wifi-6E, it does support Wifi-6, so would connect using that standard. The laptop would be able to connect using Wifi-6E in the future if you were to upgrade the router, but there is very little reason at this time to worry about that. In fact, Wifi-7 devices are hitting the market now (usually at a pretty high price).

I wouldn’t be concerned at all.

When a laptop manufacturer states ‘Wireless Type – 802.11ax’ this is the maximum (best) wireless connectivity, but older standards should be supported also and connectivity to your ASUS XT8 will remain suitable.

If you have any concerns on suitability, let us know which laptop you are thinking of purchasing and we can check for you

The Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i (16โ€ณ Intel) is Windows (OS) and supports Wi-Fi 6E 2×2 AX.

This will work with your ASUS XT8 router as your XT8 also supports AX

Hope this has been helpful and enjoy your new laptop

Vulnerability in Asus routers allows remote takeover by hackers ?

    https://www.techzine.eu/news/security/121255/vulnerability-in-asus-routers-allows-remote-takeover-by-hackers/

Drie kritieke kwetsbaarheden in Asus routers ontdekt

    3 vulnerabilities have been discovered which affect the XT8 with firmware : 3.0.0.4.388_24609 also :CVE-2024-3079,ย CVE-2024-3080 CVE-2024-3912

Is firmware 3.0.0.4.388_24621 also affected and if so : will there be a firmware update to patch these issues?

CVE-2024-3079,ย CVE-2024-3080 for the ASUS XT8 (V1 and V2) has been fixed in ASUS latest Firmware –ย  3.0.0.4.388_24621

CVE-2024-3079,ย CVE-2024-3080 for the XT8 (V1 and V2) has not had the fixes applied to firmware – 3.0.0.4.388_24609

CVE-2024-3912 as far as I can tell does not impact the ASUS XT8 either V1 or V2.

Unfortunately, usually we only really find about about these vulnerabilities once ASUS decide to or already have released fixes for these.

Hope this helps and maybe time to upgrade to the latest firmware release if you have not done so already

Hi. I have three, what I think are V1 units. I need to add a new node, should I buy a V2 model over a V1? Is there any advantage to this, and are they even compatible with a single mesh configuration? Thanks.

Welcome, in theory V1 and V2 of the XT8 should be compatible from an AiMesh (wireless backhaul) perspective, but in reality keeping the models as simular to each other as possible is a safe option.

If your XT8 nodes are connected by ethernet cables, then the above does not apply.

Not sure if you are running @GNUtons custom firmware which is based on ASUSWRT-Merlin and much loved in the ASUS router community.

FYI: V2 hardware version in 2023 has the brand new Broadcom 1.7GHz Quad-Core CPU. The older ZenWiFi XT8 V1ย  comes with a 1.5GHz Quad-Core CPU.

If you are, or are planning to run @GNUtons firmware at any point, V1 is only supported.

Who is GNUtonย and what is he about?

    What is ASUSWRT-Merlin (firmware)

They’re not actually connected by Ethernet, so I’ll, take your advice and keep them aligned, thank you.

As a complete newcomer to this, are there any specific advantages to moving to the custom firmware? Apologies if this question has been answered a thousand times.

I have 4 x XT8โ€™s currently runningย 3004.388.8_2-gnuton1.ย  I just find it better layout looking at the router stats.

There are a lot more advanced features on GNUton.

If you are not going to use these additional features, best to stay on stock.

With GNUton, FW update is done manually.

Both have been equally stable on latest stock FW and GNUton for me.

If you use the XT8โ€™s on Access Point mode on GNUton, there is a known bug with the Asus GPL:

XT8 Asus ZenWiFi cannot detect mesh nodes if in Access Point mode ยท Issue #542 ยท gnuton/asuswrt-merlin.ng (github.com)

Sensible choice. ASUSWRT-Merlin offers stock firmware that has been improved upon to add extra functionality (options)

ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware offers extra options for VPN routing and custom scripts as well as tweaks in other areas including for instance a temperature module so you can see how hot the CPU is getting.

If you are new to routers, maybe wise to stick with stock firmware, at least in the short term

    Thank you. Useful advise.

One other, probably stupid, question. Am I correct in assuming that QoS features are disabled in AP mode? They don’t seem to be available other than an Internet speed checking service.
