So had a chat with ASUS and does seems as though the ASUS 3G/4G USB Adapter Compatibility list has not been updated since 2020 and ASUS have said, “functionality of USB dongles will gradually be phase out, shifting the focus to supporting iPhone/Android phone tethering”.

Given that and after looking through this forum and a couple of other forums, does seem a couple of USB dongles work with ASUS router currently.

ZTE MF833U1, CAT4/4G USB with a Three Mobile Data SIM has been reported to work (SNB Forums) with an ASUS router last year.

Thanks for taking the time to find out.  I’m surprised they are not moving towards having a sim card slot you can simply put a sim card into and have that as a failover as opposed to tethering as what if your away when it goes down? If your at home, you can do something about it etc but if your not at the premises, its more of an issue unless they expecting you to pay for a leave a mobile plug in so if it goes down, the router switches over? I’d have though adding a sim card slot would of made more sense.

Nice idea, I am sure they would prefer the Dual Ethernet WAN port option so you can plug in an external ethernet modem like the Netgear LM1200 you mentioned in an earlier post.

DAUL WAN failover in a consumer grade router is advanced stuff, but does seem like USB dongles for ASUS routers are at best a missed opportunity and very hit or miss.

Yeah, such a shame, considering some other technology they have, having that would be the icing on the cake surely.

I think Dray Tek do some routers with inbuilt slot for a sim card, i saw soe whilst I was looking but dismissed them as didn’t want to buy a new router but maybe if Asus are looking to dropping the USB Dongle, maybe I’ll have to consider alternatives as perhaps a future firmware release will disable it.

DrayTek’s are set and forget kind or router and relatively expensive, but yes an option for the future

Hi,

So just to update this thread, I’ve now taken the plunge and updates the RT-AX86U to 23285.  Was going to go to the one before but the text on the router page implied the manual would be diff to auto so just did the auto update. Early days but so far, I think everything is ok.  I’ve not rebooted the router, just let it do the update and all seems to have remained.

Quiet like the Status page at the bottom showing you the ports and the colours.

Not seen the surf vpn link yet some were complaining about as advertising.

Anyway I’ve just checked the Dual Wan options and it shows basically the same apart from small wording change, i.e:-

1G Wan
2.5g WAN
USB

No other options.  Will try my RT-AX86S hopefully next weekend and see if that shows any difference but based on this I suspect not.
