So a placeholder for now as looking to set up Virgin Media M100 fibre broadband in one of my kids student house share, but seems only way to use a third party router is to actually put the supplied Virgin Media Superhub in modem modem and then connect a third party router via WAN port using DHCP etc.
Must be a way to actual get rid of the Virgin Media Superhub altogether and just plug an alternative Router directly into ONT box (if there is one) ?

August 12, 2022 at 6:22 am #20548So have just ordered the Virgin Media M100 package for one of my kids whom is off to UNI this autumn, looking online, seems the Virgin Media Hub (5) I think comes with an Coaxial connector to connect to the the Virgin media wall socket.
Have arranged for the Virgin media hub to be delivered to our home address, so will have a look when it arrives.
But if the Virgin Media Hub 5 does indeed have a coaxial connection (RG11 or simular) I may need a MoCA adapter to convert Coaxial to Ethernet to use a more suitable router or even source a MoCA-enabled router ?
Note: All internal Virgin Media cabling is coax (Coaxial), even if the feed from the street is fibre, which in most cases they are not. So you in essence only have full fibre to the the Virgin Media Toby Access Point located on the boundary of your property and then Coaxial is run to your property / house etc.
OPENREACH on the other hand is Full Fibre all the way inside the boundary of your property which then terminates at or inside your premises / house etc. (caveats as always)

I have been speaking with ASUS and they are in the process of releasing an MoCA adaptor
- MoCA adapter is base on MOCA HOME 2.5 standard.
- Its main purpose is ethernet over coaxial.
- It’s similar to PLC and only replaces the intermediate medium with coaxial.
- So it can support the devices with RJ-45 ports.
- The user can directly connect it to a computer, NAS, switch, stream TV or mesh routers as wired backhaul.
The MoCA adaptor is due to be released in US and Asia Pacific in late September. no news for UK/EU etc.
ASUS also are working on an MoCA Router, but early days yet and I am still digging

December 16, 2024 at 8:12 pm #35139So as a long overdue folllow-up, the Virgin media hub arrived and I did not find a suitable alternative but instead actually used the Virgin media hub as is.
Wifi reached most of the rooms in the student house and if problems had occurred with disconnects, stability etc, I had an Netgear R7800 on standby and putting the Virgin Media Hub 3 into Modem Mode and use the R7800 and main wifi device would have improved wifi coverage at the property.
