Hi all,
Parents considering getting a different car in maybe a year or so. Been looking at some options/spec to see what type of car they may want to go for and what the car comes with. Will be a used car, no more than 1 year old.
Got a couple of ideas so I’ve done a quick insurance quote (based on car reg on websites) to see what the insurance will be and basically, that then became the end of the road as the insurance quotes are astronomical. Will now have to re-evaluate nearer the time to see what insurance quotes will be.
I’ve been looking into why and it seems car insurance has gone up 40% in the last year so I’m dreading my renewal next year as they reckon the average insurance quote now is ÂŁ700 – ÂŁ800! The quotes I was doing were on 5dr Hatchback cars no more than 1 year old and with 1.5ltr engines, Petrol, Auto and was getting quotes back over ÂŁ1k!
Now can understand that if you want to drive around in a expensive brand new car say 50-60k+ with a 2ltr/3ltr engine but for your average person, with no accidents, convictions etc, it seems a bit steep. Almost as if they want you to no longer have a car. Apparently insurance dropped during covid as people were at home more and so insurance dropped as less people on the roads but they now say more people are on the roads and with all the tech etc in the cars these days, its more expensive to repair. Can understand it being more expensive but how many people actually have accidents vs the ones that don’t? I mean in my street alone, I’ve not seen any car damaged etc. I’ve seen some come back on trailers if broken down but not been involved in accidents.
So best watch out when your renewal quotes come through, could be a bit steep. I’ve seen on another forum people advising there insurance quotes have come in higher than expected.

August 29, 2023 at 6:53 am #26662As you say, car repairs and availability of spare parts are helping drive up the prices, I had someone recently drive into the side of me and damaged front wing, drivers and passenger door.
Insurance bill came to nearly ÂŁ5000 and I had a loan car as repair took nearly 20 days as parts had to come from abroad, the repair shop also confirmed parts supply are difficult and costly nowadaysÂ
.My wife’s car renewal insurance only last month came in at over ÂŁ800 and last year we paid ÂŁ320 ish, with many years no claims etc.
Found a better deals with one of the caparisons sites and ended up paying around ÂŁ350, so worth shopping around

August 29, 2023 at 10:01 am #26663Yeah, definitely! I did that last year or year before, quote came in pretty high and switched to someone else and virtually half the price of my renewal and I’d also reduced my excess. I’d been with them for several years.
Parents changed last year too as there price was getting higher and higher, also saved a fair bit.
Good to hear that’s still possible as i feared all prices have gone up 40% meaning not much savings to be had.

August 29, 2023 at 11:08 am #26664I believe the key for a good deal is to get in quotes early, say a month or more before you car insurance is due for renewal, that way when your new insurance renewal price arrives, you have some leverage or can jump insurers easily.
My car insurance is due in October (I think) so will keep you updated

August 30, 2023 at 12:00 pm #26682Thanks, yeah i usually start looking around 30days prior as I believe that’s the earlies I can do it to be able to choose the same renewal date. That’s why i finally jumped insurance as my one at the time who I’d been with for ages just kept putting up the prices so every year I’d have to phone them tell them the cheaper quote and then they would look into it and usually come in closer to the price but still a bit higher as they know most people don’t want to be bothered swapping around for say ÂŁ10-ÂŁ20 etc but this time they were way off and as said I’d saved 50% on the price, I think even they were a bit shocked as to how far out they were but was nothing they could do.
I renewed this year with them again as the price wasn’t much cheaper elsewhere so was happy to remain knowing they haven’t hiked my price for the sake of it and hoping i just renew. Price was around the same as other places but seeing how its jumped 40% this year, I’m dreading next year as I’d probably then be in the 700+ bracket….

August 30, 2023 at 2:53 pm #26686Dito, ÂŁ20 or so not worth the effort of changing for a single car premium
