Yes, very annoying that can be, newer ASUS routers often regenerate a new self-signed SSL certificate after each reboot or firmware update.
- Switch to ASUSWRT-Merlin or @GNUton if it ever becomes (or is already) available for the ZenWiFi BQ16
- Use HTTP rather than HTTPS (not advisable)
- Upload Your Own Persistent SSL Certificate

October 23, 2025 at 8:36 pm #39926I believe ASUS use this to promote Security hardening as regenerating certificates ensures that stale or compromised certs aren’t reused, which aligns with best practices for embedded device security and maybe encouraging proper SSL use by making certificate management more visible, ASUS nudging users toward using DDNS with valid certs or uploading their own trusted ones.
I did read a while ago that ASUS recently changed how the router’s HTTPS web interface works to improve security and comply with modern browser requirements (like Chrome, Edge, and Firefox) regarding HTTPS and certificate handling on local devices.

Hopefully this one is as stable for me as the last one.
