Hi all,
So Synology have released a update to DSM 7.2 which basically now removed the DSVideo app and if I understand correctly, the synology nas will no longer do hardware transcoding of films.Β It now relies on the device you are watching the film/tv show etc on to do the transcoding.Β I believe this also means Plex will have some trouble playing some films/TV Shows as I believe it used the nas for the transcoding?
According to sinology’s article, it suggests using Infuse as that will play virtually anything and transcode it. https://kb.synology.com/en-uk/DSM/tutorial/how_to_stream_videos_stored_on_Synology_NAS#x_anchor_id9e746d6afc
Any thoughts on this? I see Infuse is a paid app as you can download for free, point it to the location of your file(s) but when you try to play a item, it pops up saying you need Pro version and can then sign up for a 1 month trial, a lifetime subscription etc.
Thanks
Kev

February 8, 2025 at 7:01 pm #35574My current synology is prompting me to update but I’ve held off so far but I’m getting tempted to just do the update and then see what breaks but I also want to ensure that I have a workaround if needed i.e. by using Infuse.Β Plex has been ok so far, a bit glitchy occasionally but I’ve used it for probably 10 years or more now and it’s not bad considering it’s free.Β Issues have been around updating synology nas and loosing my library and having to reclaim it etc, bit of a nightmare as it then suddenly pics up different images for the films etc so have to go edit them etc but a minor issue really considering overall it just works.

February 8, 2025 at 7:46 pm #35575Does look that way, with the release of DSM 7.2. 2 Synology removed the Video Station package. A package that did allow NAS enthusiasts to be excited about not having to go through third-party products and instead had an integrated, affordable, fast and easy-to-use solution at their discretion.
Have you looked at Jellyfin, Plex or Emby options ?

February 8, 2025 at 7:54 pm #35576I have always used Plex but I’m not sure plex will do the transcoding of any films and I see synology refer to Infuse as the client device does all transcoding but I believe Plex was using synology for the transcoding and hence that will now stop?
I’ve not used jellyfin or Emby, I mainly watch from a AppleTV and hence synology article suggests for AppleTv use Infuse so I presume jellyfin and Emby and Android apps?

February 8, 2025 at 7:57 pm #35577I don’t particularly want to pay Β£100 to use Infuse as Plex was free but if it’s a lifetime and will truly play anything then maybe that’s the best option, I’d just sooner be sure before I pay it and then find out actually it doesn’t work :)
I know Plex had a paid for version also but tbh I didn’t see any point in paying for Plex as I couldn’t really see what advantages paying for it would give me so I never did. Just s shame Infuse don’t let you watch a few films/shows or say 10minutes of a film before prompting to pay so you know it will actually work.

February 8, 2025 at 8:02 pm #35578I did read that only VA series NAS models and the Surveillance Station application will continue to support server-side transcoding of AVC (H.264) streams. For all other models, transcoding must be handled on the receiving device ?

February 9, 2025 at 7:58 am #35579Yes, that’s what I heard but I’m not sure if plex will do transcoding on the receiving device or if it wont?
I found this link: https://nascompares.com/2023/08/18/synology-nas-plex-transcoding-performance-guide-2023-edition/ which says my D1812+ will do some software transcoding for some filetypes which I believe is done on the nas so I’m assuming with the DSM update that option is being removed along with DSVideo meaning the ability is removed?

February 9, 2025 at 8:41 am #35580It does look like you are out of luck.
As you say, your D1812+ Synology NAS only supports Software TranscodingΒ and as Synology transcoding feature is (I believe) part the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system then you will lose this option with the new DSM 7.2. 2 update.

February 9, 2025 at 1:18 pm #35581Thanks, I thought so to, so I presume Infuse would take care of that by getting the appleTV to do the transcoding as it claims to play virtually anything.
At the moment its not forcing me to upgrade so I’ve left it there but no doubt sometime in the future I’ll need to update in order to get other updates they provide.

February 9, 2025 at 1:20 pm #35582eek I actually have the DS1819+ not 1812… but still the same, software transcoding will disappear it seems.

February 9, 2025 at 5:21 pm #35583Oops
, software transcoding is the same, delay the update for as long as possible if not used in a commercial environment.

February 9, 2025 at 5:42 pm #35584Considering that but just hoping the price of infuse don’t go up as if I use it, make sense to pay the lifetime price and then get all future updates and can use forever and no monthly subscription to pay each month.
Have to say, I’m half tempted to do the update and see if it actually still does work via plex or not :)

That would be very interesting exercise, be brave and hopefully you will have a backup, just incaseΒ

February 9, 2025 at 7:54 pm #35586:) I think the update is one way so once I do it, no going back so will mean finding a solution, which I hope infuse will work for.
