So are you looking to route All LAN clients DNS that would normally be forwarded to Main Router /External DNS Service to another DNS service located on your LAN (IP) ?
Yes to my Pi Hole. I don’t want IOT devices using their sneaky hardcoded DNS.
If so, how do you propose handling LAN to LAN Routed DNS and any NAT implication – or is this not an issue for yourself in your set-up with devices such as IP cameras etc. ?
I don’t have any IP cameras, so won’t be an issue?

Currently, I’m blocking Google DNS (hardcoded Chromecast) using LAN -> Route. Adding other public DNS will seem tedious. Is there any other way with the DSL-AC88U?

Unsure if last option is yet available via ASUS DSL-AC88U.
Yes, this is what my original question pertains to. I don’t see anything in the firewall configuration.
If anyone could run https://ipv6-test.com/ and report back if they are also having ICMP being filtered.

FW 503 is the most stable for me. Current uptime of 22 days without my previous issues of the DNS dropping out or the box locking up.
The memory usage is also far superior:
FW503 – 169MB (at reboot) -> 192MB (after 22 days) ~ 1MB loss/day
FW591 – 179MB (at reboot) -> 314MB (after 22 days) ~ 6MB loss/day
I’m also convinced DSL sync is 3Mbps higher, just through observation. Perhaps the DSL drivers has a better algorithm in noisy line conditions.

There is NO change in RAM usage after 24 hours. Previously with 585/591,I would lose 6MB each day. Perhaps the memory leaks on those firmware is having other undesired side effects.
Another note, the VDSL max sync rate is around 2Mbps higher with less FEC errors. Not sure if that’s just the current line conditions so will monitor.
I will post back in a couple of weeks if the above observations still hold true.

Interesting, I’m thinking it’s firmware. With the router DNS not responding, I’m still able to get the internet working if setting client’s DNS server to Cloudflare or Google directly.
I’m using IPv4. Anyhow, I will have some answers if I manage to get my usual uptime with FW503.

Will that be the official firmware or beta? I’ve never used the betas, but might do so given my issues.

The uptime FW591 has been (in days): 38, 5, 9, 34, 13, 17, 1, 3
591 has been frustratingly unstable with lockups and DNS failures. In the case where the DNS stops, I found I can get internet working again by setting the clients to use a direct DNS server (e.g. 1.1.1.1) instead of using the routers.
Also, I noticed something that might give a clue to the lockups – the LAN LED would flash continuously despite me unplugging all ethernet devices.
If you could pass these on the ASUS, then maybe “one day” they can fix it :P

Unlike other times, I was able to log into the admin page and check what’s going on.
- Uptime 34 days, memory usage 85%
- DSL link was up, but no data flowing
- Pings to google failed.
- Systems log show nothing of interest
I suspect the DNS resolution in the modem router was not longer operational. Rebooted and all good again.
Firmware 591 is definitely not as stable as previous firmwares.

I’ve no idea what caused it. It came about quickly, not over a period of weeks.
I’m not so sure the lockup is caused by the RAM usage. I experienced the lockup at 5 and 9 days. When I checked the RAM usage the day before, it was under 50% in both cases.
I did manage to login one time and saw the DNS and DHCP processes restart in the log. So something else may be at play here…
