Hi all,
So I’ve just received my Breakdown cover renewal and its gone up a fair bit -.
I paid £75 last year for roadside breakdown and I also get complimentary home start as I’ve been with them since for a long time and I think its after 5 or 10 years you get this by default.
It has now gone up to just over £100 and tbh I don’t even recall when I last needed to call them – prob when I was back at university…
Seems a bit pricey to me. Last time, they tried to push my price to over £90 a few years back and I phoned up and got it down to I think 60 odd quid and its slowly crept up again, I was expecting maybe £80 odd this year, not over £25 increase when I’ve not even used the service.
Anyone else seen a increase at all? I’m going to phone them up when I get time see if I can bring the price down as seems silly money to pay.

September 19, 2023 at 6:57 pm #27029We switched to RAC in July and have 4 cars (4 drivers) covered for Home-start and Recovery/Relay for £134
Had a discount because a family member is NHS/Council so that helped 30% (ish) and had to call them to negotiate a good deal, which they did
Who do you use currently ?

September 19, 2023 at 7:26 pm #27034I’m currently with the AA. My Membership is the AA Gold membership (which you get after being a member for 5 or 10 years). I never got it initially and when i called them up to see what could be done with the price (over £90) they said oh you should have this and that etc etc as I been a member for a while. According to my renewal, I’ve been a member for 25 years…. I have the Gold cover which I believe includes road side, home start and I think 3 days European cover (which I’ll never use tbh). I also get some key replacement if I keep the fob on my key ring which was free so they sent them through a few years back now.
Just for the sake of it, I’ve been on confused and did a breakdown cover for my car for roadside, home start, mis fuel, wrong fuel etc (basically all options ticked) and the most expensive is about £35 for the year! cheapest is around £20 an its unlimited calls but not AA or RAC, they are companies like AXA, covermybreakdown, recover cover. Even with no excess, its less than £40 for the year!
I clearly must be missing something as to why these are far far cheaper than AA.

September 19, 2023 at 7:42 pm #27035We was with AA for a long long time and when I tried to add my Son to our cover, they wanted around £90, so much for customer loyalty, we looked around and have been with RAC etc.
The only advice I can offer, is some of the policies may include taking you to the nearest authorized repairer, rather than home relay (National Recovery) etc, no mater where you are in the country.
So attention to detail is vital and limit on distances etc.

September 19, 2023 at 8:16 pm #27037Thanks, going to give them a call when I can and see what they say. I’ve got a few weeks so no major panic, was just bit shocked when it came through.. and wondered if this is going up as well as car insurance.. seems crazy when I not had to call them for over 20 years, was expecting a decent price due to them effectively doing nothing.

September 19, 2023 at 8:40 pm #27040You have to be a savvy shopper nowadays, but must say, and not related to topic, went to my local car garage to get my front wheels balanced, their price is still the same as two years ago, so not all bad
