Great news about memory usage and finally working well for you and your settings (I will relay this positive news back to ASUS)

Think this time was just lucky that it freed-up RAM by itself. Will report the setting bug once I am sure about it. Not a big deal, just for reporting to the Asus FW team.

How did the six days freeing up RAM progress, is router still up and running with latest firmware ?

No it went down as usual after 6 days, I found the culprit, its the wireless scheduler.
Every time it cycles the WiFi radio it uses extra memory until you runout (approx 6 – 7 days) at ~4MB.
    Firmware Version:v9.1.2.3_854

The DSl-N66U is no longer supported by ASUS and for some strange reason, they removed all previous firmware’s.

An error I believe they made, I have asked ASUS to put back the firmware’s which was available when the router was within its support lifecycle, but did not get a response from ASUS

@ gnuton is doing some interesting work for the various MediaTek based DSL Routers, but I do not believe  he has done work specifically for the DSL-N66U currently.

Update: I have just had feedback from ASUS regarding OPEN VPN and your DSL-N66U

    Hi xxxx

Due to memory concern, this model could not support OpenVPN.

Understood – Are you using ADSL or VDSL as they are different to adjust SNR

is 8 SNR, is it to low/high for you ???

VDSL – To fix SNR at 8 dB, go to Administration > DSL Setings (Stability Adjustment) and choose 8dB  ?

ADSL- will depend what your current SNR is ? (usually used if connection is unstable) to increase SNR value

e.g, current SNR = 7dB and you want 8 dB, choose -1 dB from ADSL Stability Adjustment

    7 – ( -1) = 8   (if my memory serves me well)
