outDiscards is how many outbound packets were discarded without errors.

This can be caused by buffer size which is a router specific.

Have you got any other kit connected to your network (switch) ?

Have you changed the MTU value and try changing upload QoS to 15% below your synch rate to reduce outDiscards and 10-15% below download synch rate to see if CRC / packet loss is reduced ?

    Worth a try ?

As you have probable seen already, new DSL-N16 stock firmware is available from ASUS

    Worth a try ?

    Hi,

Thanks very much for your help. I downloaded the latest firmware on the DSL-N16. It did help with the packet discards.

But, I think we decided to just buy a new router in the end, as some of these offer some very useful features like SQM.

I think we will use the DSL-N16 in bridge mode. This allows the device to act as a modem only, is that correct?

I think all I need to do is set the device to ‘Bridge’ mode, like this:

After, that I think you just connect the 1st LAN port on the DSL-N16 to the WAN port on the new router?

In effect, the modem handles the DSL part of the connection and the router handles the actual internet connection to an ISP (PPPoE in this case)?

Presumably, I should also disable the DHCP server on the DSL-N16? And change the IP address of the device?

The router we’ve brought is a used Asus RT-AX56U (should arrive in a few days), for £65. It has a quad core 1.5ghz CPU and supports SQM with Asuswrt-Merlin.

Nice router and will be so much better than the DSL-N16

Yes, DSL-N16 bridge mode is as you say. just make sure you check for any double NAT after setting up ?

That’s good news. the DSL-N16 does have some good modem / DSL options (and I can limit the upstream VDSL frequencies to reduce CRCs to 0). I have a soft spot for it, as I got it 2nd hand for just £10 and it has been generally better than all the other DSL/VDSL modems I’ve used.

What’s the best way to check for a double NAT?

On a windows PC, go to CMD.exe and type ‘tracert 8.8.8.8’

If you see the first two hops in private IP addresses, then there is a double NAT in your network

Note, you may have to tweak the VLAN ID settings a little as not sure if DSL-N16 will handle this under WAN or LAN (iptv) settings

Let us know if you get this working ?

    Cheers, I’ll do that.

The VLAN ID can be set in the WAN settings menu. I think I can just leave it at 101.

I’m curious about the differences I might see using SQM on the AX56U. Is this something you have used much before?

VLAN ID 101 is what you need, just unsure if in Bridge, it is entered via LAN settings or WAN to still work.

SQM & CAKE, always a good subject, I love CAKE and have used it with ASUSWRT-Merlin

The Asus RT-AX56U didn’t work well for me. I was getting random WAN disconnections as well as frequent drops in download speed to nothing.

I wonder if this was due to the router been pre-owned.

You don’t have much luck . Did you factory reset and load latest firmware and config via QiS, maybe try ASUS Stock firmware rather than ASUSWRT-Merlin, just incase a bug or settings issue ?

Thanks, but unfortunately neither the latest official firmware or ASUSWRT-Merlin fixed the WAN disconnection issues or frequent download rate drops.

Forgot to mention that the RT-AX56U wouldn’t sync up at all with the DSL-N16 acting as the modem.

It did sync up with the technicolor router and TP-Link Archer VR200 in bridge mode, however. The VR200 worked the best out of all devices in bridge mode, and didn’t have any weird issues like not being able to access the web interface.

I’m a bit unsure if we should buy another of the same type of router that’s new, or a different brand and model.

I think we will be returning the RT-AX56U tomorrow (bought from CEX).

Can you recommend any other routers with offer SQM?

What are you looking for your router to perform,  best to understand what you want from your router, Gaming, Parental controls, scaleable Wifi and/or torrenting etc etc.

    and budget ?

Mostly just manage congestion from heavy downloads while doing other things like video conferencing and online game streaming (keeping latency / bufferbloat delays low with SQM).

I was just wondering if you have any ideas about what might’ve gone wrong with the ASUS RT-AX56U? Can routers be ‘worn out’ for example? I suppose a defective version (e.g RT-AX56U v1) is more likely.

EDIT – I just checked and it’s the RT-AX56U hardware version 1.0 (manufactured in 2020).

From what I remember back in 2021, the v2 was a Chinese variant that did or does not support ASUSWRT-Merlin. but unsure status nowadays ?

    Which one is yours ?

    Definitely V1.
