Can I operate the DSL-N16 as a modem in bridge mode, just by disabling NAT and DHCP? And leaving PPPOE (or maybe ‘Automatic IP’) enabled?
Or, would the ethernet port connecting to the WAN port on the router be inactive with bridge mode off?

March 4, 2022 at 8:11 am #18058Definitely V1.
Good news
For Bridge mode, follow the below instructions, any deviation from below may not work a Bridge Modem.
- set โService Unitโ to โBridge #1โ (or any other you like)
- set โEnableโ to โYesโ
- If you have VLAN ID:
- set โEnableโ of 802.1Q to โYesโ and fill in the VLAN ID, for instance 101.
- And press โApplyโ button.
- Then go to LAN โ IPTV, please choose IPTV STB port, check โRemove VLAN TAG from WANโ option, and press โApplyโ.
Then plug in ASUS RT-AX56U and see if it gets a public wan IP address

March 4, 2022 at 8:48 am #18059For testing purposes, you could enable PPPoE relay on the DSL-N16 to see if you experience the same issues with your RT-AX56U
Note: PPPoE relay is not a pure Bridge / Modem , but good for your test of RT-AX56U v1
Advanced Setting > WAN > NAT Passthrough

March 4, 2022 at 10:40 am #18060Thanks very much for that info.
I think we will probably just buy a new RT-AX56U at this point, I’ve been reading about how used routers (including Asus routers) can fail gradually and the problems people describe seem to follow the same pattern.
I may try the PPPoE relay with the new router though.

March 4, 2022 at 10:43 am #18062No problem, with buying second hand tech there is always a risk it is not what it should be

March 4, 2022 at 6:02 pm #18073This is so weird, I’m getting the same problem on a new RT-AX56U (v1). Download speeds dropping to 0 and occasional disconnections.
Tried the earliest and latest firmware with the same results.
Speed tests run directly from the device itself (integrated into the firmware / web interface) report normal download speeds of ~40mbps.

March 4, 2022 at 6:17 pm #18076Have you tested via Wifi or ethernet cable, if wifi, then try ethernet cable ?

March 4, 2022 at 6:43 pm #18077Seems to happen on both WIFI and ethernet. With QOS enabled or disabled.

That is a surprise, what you using as modem currently and try changing cable between modem and router incase it is faulty ?
With wifi, have you tried via a speetest app on your mobile ?

March 5, 2022 at 3:19 am #18080So, no luck with the new RT-AX56U, we are going to return it to the shop in the morning.
Looking at other Asus routers, unfortunately there appears to be a history of PPPOE connection issues on their more recent routers, possibly due to a poor implementation of this protocol, as discussed here:
https://www.snbforums.com/threads/why-asus-cant-get-the-basics-right-like-pppoe.55795/
Anyway, I’ve been looking at a mini NanoPi based router here that uses OpenWRT firmware:
Hardware Option 1: The NanoPi R4S
setup guide found here:
https://wiki.stoplagging.com/books/technical-guides/page/sqm-for-1-gbps-lines-with-openwrt
I thought it looks like a pretty cool device for the money (should be able to handle SQM 1gbps connections). My only reservations would be:
a) VDSL modem compatibility / PPPOE issues
b) Reliability of the WAN connection
It occurs to me that one way to avoid PPPOE issues, would be to switch to an ISP that uses DHCP (Automatic IP), like Talktalk (residential) do. But I think all other FTTC ISPs in the UK require PPPOE connections :(

March 5, 2022 at 7:18 am #18085I’m considering buying one of these instead:
Amazon Eero 6
amazon.co.uk/amazon-eero-6/product-reviews/B086PL9KPT/ref=cm_cr_othr_d_show_all_btm?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews
Apparently they have added support for both PPPOE connections and SQM on the latest model.

March 5, 2022 at 7:33 am #18087I would also add to the list AVM fritz!box 7530 ax (all in one unit)

Did you try PPPoE relay setup on your DSl-N16 ?

March 5, 2022 at 7:39 am #18088March 5, 2022 at 7:48 am #18091Yup, no luck with PPPoE relay enabled on the DSL-N16.
Strange, did you try changing cable between modem and router ?
The other area to consider is I believe TalkTalk only allow one user account to synch with DSL, so if you have username/password set-up as normal on DSL-N16 and then you enable PPPoE Relay, this will synch with DSL-N16 crudentials and then Router cannot connect / synch with account also.

March 5, 2022 at 8:01 am #18092There is also the new ASUS DSL-AX82U which is like your DSL-N16, but newer and more powerfull and does take ASUSRWRT-Merlin firmware customised by GNuton
