So had some time yesterday and updated my Netgear XR500 to the latest firmware – XR500 Firmware Version 2.3.2.134 and decided to see if I could finally get IPv6 working with my BT broadband connection that uses the /56 PD.
Update: Glad to say that so far, IPv6 seems to be working (only 12 hours) and each LAN node is receiving a unique IPv6 address which I verified via ‘whatismyipaddress.com’
FYI: Each LAN node receives both an IPv6 and IPv4 address, the IPv4 addresses are NAT’d and I verified via ‘whatismyipaddress.com’ this means IPv4 is still supported (dual IP stack) as well as IPv6.
Netgear XR500 IPv6 Settings:
- So to set the Netgear XR500 to use IPv6 (ISP must support IPv6), then go to
- Settings > Advanced Settings> IPv6
- Then select Internet Connection Type = PPPoE
- Then Select, use same login details as IPv4 PPPoE checkbox (very important)
- Then for myself, under LAN Setup I selected Auto Config radial button
Then clicked apply and rebooted XR500 and IPv6 and Ipv4 was both available to LAN clients and web sites I visited
Early days yet, and still have to test Geo-filter and other services, and ensure stability remains consistent etc.
I did notice that even though the Netgear XR500 router is using both IPv4 and IPv6, only an IPv4 address is shown in the Internet Status – WAN IP box

December 19, 2022 at 11:05 am #22026So these are the two IP addresses I see when I access the internet by two seperate devices and check with whatismyipaddress.com.
(first 64 bits replaced as they were the same hexadecimal number)
Laptop: 0000:0000:0000:0000:b52d:77ba:b39f:ae1d
iPhone 0000:0000:0000:0000:68e4:6bb8:807a:9db4
So the Netgear XR500 is actually giving me an IPv6 /64 PD (prefix length) and given BT supports only IPv6 /56, this is most interesting, but does seem to work still and I assume the /56 prefix allocated by BT actually gives you 256 /64 subnets (I think)

December 19, 2022 at 11:51 am #22027That’s standard (or same here in Austria) to get an IPv6/64 for modem and another one /56 or /64 (whatever provider gives you) for your homenet.

December 19, 2022 at 3:01 pm #22030In Austria, is your ISP /56 or /64 ?

December 19, 2022 at 8:41 pm #22031unfortunately only /64 for residential (so you will have 2 of them).

December 19, 2022 at 9:19 pm #22033It is always interesting to understand how other countries work with IPv6 👍
