Yesterday in the morning our Octopus In-Home-Display (IHD) unit was showing correct value for Electricity usage but £0.00 for gas which I thought was a little odd.
Came home in the evening and still the IHD was showing £0.00 for GAS. I then turned Off and then back On the IHD incase this was the problem and let it settle back in over night.
The IHD wasn’t the problem.
The next day I checked again our IHD and still it was displaying £0.00 for Gas, so I checked our Octopus online account and it showed no Gas usage for the last couple of days, but Electric usage was fine.
I then went to the Gas meter (outside) and pushed the button that usually allowed me to take reading and nothing happened, the Gas meter LED did not show any signs of life.
I then checked our Smets 2 Electric meter (Kaifa MA120 SMETS2) and that was working correctly and the Cellular communications hub, SW / WAN / HAN and GAS Led was blinking as normal.
Note: my Kaifa MA120 SMETS2 has located above it a WNC UBC-TN6 SKU1 Cellular communications hub.
MESH – Mesh Communications Network
If you have a SKU2 or SKU3 type of Communications Hub, then both WAN and MESH are active, and will display the slow-flash from these indicators if all is well.
If you have a SKU1 (85% of houses do), then the MESH indicator will always be off.
I then went to the menu on the Smets 2 Electric meter and scrolled through until I found CONFIGURATION > ALCS Test.
I ran the test and this said OK, I then checked the Gas meter again and it had sprung back into life and LED was working.
Great I thought, so went back inside the house and restarted the IHD and this then picked up GAS usage for the day.
So I left the everything alone over night and the next morning / day the same again, Gas showing £0:00. and I checked the GAS Meter LED and again all the buttons were unresponsive.

July 2, 2024 at 9:50 am #32696Alas no way to check error codes on the GAS meter as the LCD does not seem to work.

July 2, 2024 at 7:39 pm #32700Hi, heard of this, you either need to press a button to make it come on again OR the battery has died, in which case the battery can be replaced by a gas fitter BUT they typically just come and replace the whole smart meter…

July 2, 2024 at 7:39 pm #32701July 2, 2024 at 7:41 pm #32702Octopus advise to press the red A button to “wake it up”… or press one of the buttons to see if it wakes up

July 2, 2024 at 7:51 pm #32703Thank you, I know the GAS meter uses a battery which is supposed to last 10 years, Usually the LCD screen remains blank until you press a button and then usually the LCD displays ‘Welcome to Octopus’ or something similar.
That does not happen now when I push one of the buttons, LCD screen remains blank which means GAS meter or battery could be at fault.
I think I have solved my problem, but am awaiting the morning to see if my IHD also confirms this, then will populate above reserved post places to help others.
Really annoying if my fix works, as this shows these Smart Meters are temperamental or at the very least, sensitive to mains supply fluctuation’s.

July 4, 2024 at 7:46 am #32712So running the CONFIGURATION > ALCS Test on our Smets 2 Electric meter only seemed to work for a very short period of time, which is a shame as I now have to contact Octopus Energy and ask them to run a few checks there end and/or send an engineer out

July 6, 2024 at 1:44 pm #32732Hi, any update from Octopus? Did they have any idea of the issue?

July 6, 2024 at 1:45 pm #32733Is your gas meter a small SMTS2 meter or one of the ones which looks more like a traditional gas meter but is SMTS 2, i think they are uniflow or something?

July 6, 2024 at 2:21 pm #32734I had sent an email to Octopus help desk and noticed yesterday that the IHD had registered 33 pence, alas today the IHD has not registered any value for Gas usage first think but just checked and is now showing £0:44 pence of usage.
Gas usage seems a little low but will wait over the weekend to see if the IHD is still showing daily gas usage and then log into my Octopus account and see if <£0:50 is normal Gas usage for this time of year .
Could be good news that issue is fixed and if so I will phone and ask what / why it went wrong and feedback ;)
FWIW: just checked the Gas meter outside our house and that is now working when I press the buttons
Gas meter is behind a locked gate so no access to it from the front of the house.
Looks like if the issue has been resolved, it was done remotely.

July 7, 2024 at 7:53 am #32736Update: first thing this morning, the IHD is displaying both Gas ad Electric usage, which is a positive £0:27 / £0:93 (most of those values are the for the standing charge) might have to put on our Gas central heating today to see if Gas usage increase and is picked up by IHD.

July 8, 2024 at 6:34 pm #32743So today’s Gas Meter reading via IHD was £0:00 and Gas meter buttons again does not work.
So I contacted Octopus Energy (telephone) and they also think it appears that there is a defect with the gas meter and a replacement Meter and an Engineer will be in touch with us at some point to arrange an appointment.
Not sure if this is a
or an
at this point

July 8, 2024 at 7:36 pm #32744hmm very strange, i did hear of some battery issues causing them to have no display etc and strangely they seem to prefer to change the meter as opposed to change the battery….. seems a bit overkill doing that but who knows…. I guess it just boosts there number of installs :)
nothing blocking signal to elec meter?

July 8, 2024 at 7:52 pm #32746Our Gas and Electric meters sit next to each other on the outside wall (separate enclosures) and no changes in that scenario for many years.
My monies on a flat battery as the gas meter does spring into life on occasions and sends a random reading to the IHD via the Smets 2 electric meter.

July 13, 2024 at 7:33 pm #32787Our IHD is showing a £0:60 value for Gas usage tonight, just noticed this as I was in the kitchen.
Earlier this week was overcast and cool the IHD for Gas was not showing a value but it has been very sunny today and I wonder if battery sprung back into life momentarily.
