Oh I’m hard capped anyway. My package from BT is ~45. This happened when I recontracted. Early last year I was getting 60. They said they don’t offer higher than my current speed in my area. Even questioned retentions about it. I did get to haggle down to ÂŁ26.99 so it’s not too bad.
I just saw this (apparently only Merlin firmware shows it?):

The router is running at 62c while not really doing anything… this is Scotland in Winter. I can’t imagine what an Australian summer would do.
Do you think having 30 packet overhead is okay or should I try lower? It seems fine right now but I don’t know what to check for if I do try 27 or something.

Update time. Installed the custom firmware and ran Cake.
I selected VDSL2 PPPoE PTM as I think this is correct. This gave me a WAN packet overhead of 30.

Fast.com is basically fixed in loaded ms now:

However as you can see, the download speeds are much lower now. Upload also barely goes above 7 here.
Bufferbloat also A+

Anything to change?
Edit: I realised what’s likely going on with the speed decrease. Am I supposed to input basically my 100% speed in the first screenshot (e.g. 44 download) instead of the 40 value I have inputted as this is the value post 90% being taken off?

Ah I did not know that. I’ll let the line settle for another day and see what I can come up with. Still think I’ll just bang on cake though lol.

I definitely think I need to try Cake. I was torrenting (Linux ISO downloading ofcourse) and I was getting ping spikes. Not high ping spikes (about 15-35ms) but it was definitely happening even when I was only downloading at about 30 Mbps. Far below what I had set. I’m guessing the multiple connections is messing it up.
DSL stats update. Some CRC and ES has creeped in but it still seems fine I think. I saw threads where people were getting thousands of CRC per day and people said it was completely fine. 1 day 16 hours uptime right now.

Sorry to double post but I just decided to look at fast.com. It said my loaded ping went up which is true but only on the initial burst. I ran a ping test to bbc.co.uk then started fast.com

As you can see on pings 8-9 is where the burst happened before returning to normal even when downloading.
Is this expected behavior of traditional QoS on Asus? Will something like Adaptive Qos or Cake not have those small spikes?

You think it’s best to just sit still a couple days and see what happens before I try merlin? You don’t have to worry about all this FEC and CRC stuff on FTTP right?

When I had eero mesh the far away camera was full 3 bars but now I’m back to 1 bar. However I’ll just have to live with it. There is no other mesh system that has SQM. I could maybe try TP-Link Deco but I will just stick with this single Asus and if I do need more coverage I’ll go into AiMesh and buy something like a TUF-AX5400 for ~ÂŁ100. Deco would be ok I think but then I’m back to a non all in one unit and some mobile phone app in which on most Deco you can’t even configure MTU size and even on units you can it’s only specific hardware versions of the same unit. Just seems a mess to look into.
Alot of screenshots below. I just decided to set traditional QoS on stock firmware. Relatively safe values:

I don’t even know if I need cake now. However, I think I have discovered a weird bug. Sometimes my router page looks really weird.

It states no clients connected, wireless isn’t filled out and the aura rgb states it’s still on when I know it’s not:

Even after closing Google Chrome, and going back to router.asus.com it persists. To fix it I have to click Logout at the top and then it is normal again:

You can now see that the clients are displaying normally, wifi is filled in at the right hand side and the aura rgb now properly shows it is off.
Last screenshot, do these DSL stats look ok or should I be worried?

A CRC and ES error on upstream and 10,000 FEC. Tbh I never really looked at my stats on the Billion to compare.
Sorry for the amount of screenshots but seems like I need them to explain.

Didn’t have much time to configure tonight, family needed net for a work project but wow what a fast setup. It auto detected the VLAN ID (101) and I selected BT Infinity and that was it after I did the bthomehub@btbroadband.com stuff. Just connected stuff via wireless to make sure it’s ok and now my upstairs PC (wi fi 6) is pinging bbc.co.uk at basically the same pings as wired give or take 1-2 ms. Pretty insane so far.
As for installing merlin, I’ll tackle it tomorrow. I just get the latest .w file and upload here right:

Also this is the speed the asus gave me directly:

Is there any issue with setting anything lower than what most people recommend for QoS? e.g. 95% of that is roughly 42 but would it be ok being conservative with say 41? About 9 for upload?
Also the router did something I had never seen before. It pinged bbc.co.uk in 14ms!

Best I ever saw before on other routers was 15ms and that was super rare (usually 16-17). I may hit 12ms on FTTP haha. :D
Thank you

I don’t know if IPv6 has any advantages for gaming but I will definitely be trying other DNS servers once I know that the default service from BT is okay. Probably tomorrow night I will set it up as internet is needed by family tonight and tomorrow morning/evening.

Hello again.
So an update. There was a deal on Amazon Eero system I wanted to try (ÂŁ200 for a 3 pack so I knew coverage would not be an issue) but after testing it’s really not good for gaming. The SQM system barely works. My Billion was better!
I just decided to get the DSL-AX82U as an all in one solution and send the Eero back (I will add via AiMesh if I need more coverage later). I will set it up tomorrow. While I am here I have a question I’ve never really thought about.
Is it worthwhile to configure alternate DNS like Google on the DSL-AX82U or should I stay on BT default?
Thanks

Can I ask what the +ms value is on waveform when you don’t get an A+? Under 8ms or so? I know it needs under 5ms to get A+

DSL-AX82U can definitely get 920+. Timestamped speedtest below of DSL-AX82U:

B grade. If I do whatever super basic QoS that the Billion is I can just about achieve an A but in no way is it getting to A+
