I managed to get the /opt directory to automount to asusware.arm with entware installed so after reboot and then i enter telnet then cd /opt/ and it returns /tmp/mnt/hdd/asusware.arm/ i just have not figure out how to get paths to set auto to /opt/bin and /opt/sbin.
the way i got the /opt symlink to autolink on reboot of modem/router was to install download master then reboot.
i then telnet into modem and then copied the .asusrouter file from asusware.arm to ../ so in main hdd directory to create a backup of the automount /opt. i did not modify the file as unsure if it will function but symlink does work to /opt. the steps below should help same as krvi mthods but not using ln -sf /tmp/mnt/entware/asusware.arm /tmp/opt.
Here are the steps i took in a clean way to follow.
<!–more–>
Step 1: Install Download Master from within the ASUS DSL AC88U GUI then Reboot once installed.
Step 2: Telnet into 192.168.1.1
Step 3: cd to /mnt/hdd/asusware.arm/
Step 4: cp .asusrouter ../
Step 5: cd ../
Step 6: rm -rf asusware[.arm]
Step 7: reboot
Step 8: Once rebooted telnet again to 192.168.1.1
Step 9: mkdir /mnt/hdd/asusware.arm
Copy Backed Up .asusrouter to asusware.arm Directory.
Step 10: cp /mnt/hdd/.asusrouter /mnt/hdd/asusware.arm/
Step 11: reboot
Step 12: Ignore yellow exclamation mark explaining USB apps are corrupt, once entware is installed and you reboot yellow exclamation mark disappears.
Step 13: telnet into 192.168.1.1 once again :)
Step 14: cd /opt/
output should show
/tmp/mnt/hdd/asusware.arm/
Step 15: wget -O – http://bin.entware.net/armv7sf-k3.2/installer/generic.sh | sh
Step 16: reboot
Step 17: Figuring out how to add /opt/bin and /opt/sbin to PATH variable during reboot. ( i haven’t figured out this step yet :( )
I hope this helps.

So UK Sentinel, don’t bother bugging Asus on my behalf
Now, I need to set telnet to be enabled by default, temporarily, until I can get entware+dropbear installed. On the DSL-N55U these variables (script_usbumount, and telnet iirc) were set in nvram, but it looks like they are in some config file on this model. Any pointers?
Congrats, I have sent email request for Debug firmware, but will cancel it, how did you get Telnet working on your DSl-AC88U – B ??
PM’ed you. I managed to get all my Entware stuff mostly working. But I did find a method to automount it on usbmount or start. .asusrouter does not seem to get executed if it is modified :/. But so far so good; this has saved my purchase
Thanks 😉
May I ask how U got entware working as I am also trying to achieve same goal but haven’t been able to figure it out with the DSL AC88U on stock firmware. I have telnet access but haven’t been able to use opt directory or jffs but found data folder which seems to be similar to jffs. I tried the script_usbmount n script_usbhotplug and script_usbumount options with nvram but had no luck.
Any help on how you got entware working would be greatly appreciated :)
Regards,
Ricky.

I do not think (I am assuming) ASUS want that sort of firmware publicly available any more. I will email @pavlf @tiberiuscato and act as a go between if that ok with you guys ?
I would appreciate any firmware that has telnet/SSH access ATM. I will not publicly post it anywhere and I will update to a newer firmware if you (UK sentinel) are able to obtain one from ASUS for me :)

Ricky.

No Problem, I have asked ASUS, they maybe closed now for the weekend, so should hear back early next week 😉

I can provide you with my google email address to send link hopefully UK sentinel can get me a firmware that’s current but I will gladly take an older beta with telnet/SSH access.

I would really love a version that has telnet/SSH access. Can U provide a link to Dropbox so I can download to my mobile if that’s okay.
I have been unable to get it from Asus nor Google
Google directed me to this page which state on page 1 telnet had been enabled but on the stock firmware which is higher then what was on page 1 it don’t include it. They have no reason not to. They just don’t want us to use the product the way we want or for reasons we purchased it.

I think I will be returning this modem to get a full refund as is a total waste of nearly 600 AUD. And the DSL AC68U I got brand new for half the price of the DSL AC88U.
I might also take Asus to the Australian ombudsman as this modem has been sold with features it doesn’t support and features it do have either don’t work or is a complete UI mess, the ui has taken 5 year step backwards in the DSL AC88U compared to the DSL AC68U.
If Asus are no longer enabling SSH on stock firmware, then I have no need of their modem/routers.
I Tried emailing Asus from the feedback form asking for telnet/SSH access for my DSL AC88U modem or I’d be taking it back for refund and filing a complaint with ombudsman but I haven’t heard back.
They seem to reply to positive feedback but anything remotely not positive and we’re ignored.
Your lucky that they reply to you.
Thanks for the help and info.
It was such a shame they advised in an email prior to purchase it had identical software features to the DSL AC68U, which they lied to me about. I’m glad I kept the email from them for the ombudsman. :)
Regards,
Ricky.
Looks like I’ll be plugging in the DSL AC68U again until it dies and I will not be purchasing any Asus products ever again after this inciedent.
