Other than that â it might try a different firmware again.
Best option to see which firmware is best for your scenario.

September 25, 2022 at 5:39 pm #21004Yeah sadly the reboot schedule isn’t the best option because these firmwares are very unstable, unusable really.
If it is still within three years, you are still in warranty, might be worth it to contact them to see if they are willing to return and refund it, I contacted them 2 years ago while it was still in the 3 years warranty and after a few weeks of trying to solve these issues, I told them that I read on multiple forums that this router was considered EOL by Asus and they are refunding anyone who asks for it and they confirmed it and asked me for the purchase receipt and asked me to ship it back to the NL(??), I refused in the end because shipping it was like 75 euros back then (living in Egypt and they were very strict that I handle all costs associated with returning it back) and they would refund me 178 euros which is what I paid for it on amazon.de for the router only (without shipping and without customs, much more expensive when added) after it arrives there.
Hopefully you can decipher this mess of text xD

October 26, 2022 at 9:03 am #21413drain of available RAM (memory) so this is probable why the DSL-AC88U locks up after a few days. Did you happen to notice the available RAM at any point before the router failed ?
Hi, I did some testing on this router and ram is not the reason it locks up.
I left a shell open with top running until the issue started showing up and came to the conclusion that it is either due to a buggy kernel or a buggy busybox.
Basically, with plenty of ram available, anything run after the issue shows up (even a simple ls) may end up in a Z(iirc) state.
Debugging further takes time and, frankly, it is asus’ job.
The only solution is either to go back to the last working version, which I believe it was v1.10.05 build503 (btw, is it possible to have the debug version of that build and the v1.10.06 build585?), use it as a modem in bridge mode (it still “freezes” but dsl works) or setup the scheduler to reboot it every day.
I don’t know if there are working (non-)public/beta versions released after v1.10.05 build503, but v1.10.06 build591 is 100% affected as well.

By going back so far, you do run the risk of security updates not being applied etc. (nist.gov)
- v1.10.05 build503 does seem to be the most stable build.
- Only debug version I have is v1.10.05 build
503591 and can send you link if you wish ? - Build Version 1.10.06_Build585 is available via the ASUS download servers.

It’s a good thing you mentioned the security risk and I’d recommend anyone willing to go back so far to avoid it unless they know what they’re doing (using it in bridge mode is relatively safe, but there is no point to do it as the bug doesn’t affect that mode).
I’ll gladly take the debug version v1.10.05 build503, I want to run some quick tests on it, thanks a lot.

October 26, 2022 at 1:25 pm #21416I did forget to mention that no version of DSL-AC88U firmware supports VLAN ID (802.1q) tagging whilst it is in Bridge mode, so the bridge will have to be a pure bridge ?
Let me know if this firmware is still on interest and I will send you an email etc ?

Thank you again, but I think you sent me the wrong link as it points to v1.10.06 build591 instead of v1.10.05 build503.

October 26, 2022 at 5:31 pm #21422So had a look through my downloads list on my server and can only find DSL-AC88U_v1.10.06_build591_debug
Maybe an old reference to 503 which I have mistakenly referenced , apologies. [busy day]

February 4, 2023 at 4:26 pm #22677Hi, sorry if maybe I’m doing necropost with this comment but I wanted to ask a question, I have both a rt86u and a dsl 88u, what I wanted to know is if I can make the dsl 88u only modem to connect it with RT 86u I would not use my provider’s modem as it is very uncomfortable and unstable

February 4, 2023 at 5:08 pm #22678Welcome, the DSL-AC88U does support bridge mode, but VLAN ID (802.1Q) does not work so I am unsure if your region you need to specify VLAN ID ?
A member in the forum was using their DSL-AC88U in Iceland (I believe) with no VLAN ID value and this worked as a modem very well

March 11, 2023 at 2:53 am #22974in my country (Italy) I think it is required, in my case I have already tried to insert it (835) and to deactivate all the routing part of the 88u dsl, but rt86u did not receive the connection from the modem. putting it in bridge then I should connect it to the router via cable, but still the connection is not received. so I don’t know how to actually proceed. if there is a specific method to make the two devices work together

March 11, 2023 at 2:55 am #22975At this point I think I have to use the rt86u as a bridge(?) but in that case I would lose all of its functionality and not solve much

March 11, 2023 at 5:09 am #22976ok after several hours (and days) I succeeded, actually on the dsl88u the vlan id function in bridge mode doesn’t work, so I wondered if this function was in the rt86u because I had never noticed it, unfortunately it wasn’t there After trying, I discovered something bizarre. the vlan id function is present on the rt86u but it is hidden inside the setup wizard, in fact it is necessary to activate it, go to professional mode and enter the special requirements of the isp to access a window that I have never noticed, the functions were incomprehensible so I did the simplest thing for an ignoramus which I am. on vpi enthernet, i entered my isp’s vlan id and it worked.
