It’s been a couple of weeks since I sent in that feedback and I have not received anything back from ASUS.

If you have time, could you check in with them and see if they have any plans to fix the issue?

    Thanks!

New ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 (v1) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388_24753

    version 3.0.0.4.388_24753

    2025/08/04

Important: After installing this firmware, we strongly recommend performing a factory-default reset to activate every new security adjustment.

    Security Enhancements:
    – Password Policy Upgrade – Minimum 10 characters with at least 1 letter, 1 digit and 1 special symbol, and no consecutive identical characters; hardens defence against brute-force attacks.
    – HTTPS on 8443 – Management interface now served over TLS by default.
    – UPnP Disabled – Universal Plug and Play starts in the off state for reduced surface exposure.
    – AiCloud Authentication Hardening (CWE-287) – Added layered verification.
    – Authentication Logic Refactor – Removed redundant code paths for a lean sign-in flow.
    – Memory Safety Guard (CWE-476) – Introduced null-reference protections across critical services.
    – Enhanced IPsec Parameter Validation – The existing input checks have been hardened.
    – Data Exposure Mitigation (CWE-200) – Reinforced controls on sensitive pathways.
    – Detailed Audit Trails – Expanded logging within the authentication module.

    System Improvements:
    – Connection Stability – Core algorithms refined for steadier links.
    – Scheduling Accuracy – Timed tasks execute reliably under PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP WAN modes.
    – Client List Maintenance – Resolved an issue that prevented offline devices from being removed from the client list.

Does look like from this update, ASUS are addressing concerns about brute-force attacks and weak passwords.

Do we have to go through all the setup again once we’ve done a factory rest or can we restore the settings from a previous backup?

If you restore a backup all changes will be restored like before factory reset and would be the same like now and factory changes will be gone.

My concern was that as the password policy has changed, current password that does not meet new policy requirements could cause an issue ?

I am checking that with ASUS .

Thank you for checking with ASUS.

My password already complies with the new policy. It will be such a pain to have to reassign all the static routes, redo all static IP addresses, the port forwarding, let alone reconnect the three nodes.

I can just see a whole weekend of expletives and pulling my hair out because I’ve missed some little detail.

You could safe your actual config, make a factory reset without any changes and safe config again.

Then make the update and again safe config.

Now you got 2 clean configs safed before and after update and may compare them to know, what really has changed.
So you might be able to adapt your actual config to the neccessary default changes.

Not really less work, but you got much time to adapt step by step.

So I have had feedback from ASUS and predictable ASUS say ‘perform factory reset’, alas from a business perspective, I don’t think any other option was going to be offered by ASUS.

We recommend perform a factory-default reset and set up from scratch.

You might need something a little stronger

I think @Grisu mentioned something similar above, might be worth you taking a backup copy of your current config, then upgrade to new firmware and then take a backup of the new config.

Then factory reset and apply latest backup config, reboot and see how that goes ?

might save some time and let us know if this work ?

As an interesting thought, if you had “auto update” enabled on your XT8’s, I assume this would have updated your XT8’s automatically and by passed the factory reset advise given in the changelog
