We had an Octopus Energy ‘Chameleon Technology (UK) Ltd’ In-Home Display IHD7-CAD-PPMID and the unit stopped working the other week, after trying a few options to reset IHD such as powering down IHD unit and letting the battery go flat etc., nothing seemed to work. So we contacting Octopus Energy whom also could not remote commission the IHD7 IHD and Octopus kindly sent us a replacement IHD.

We now have a GEO Trio IHD from Octopus working and I thought I would detail the steps we took to get the GEO Trio to work with our Smart Gas and Electric meters as it did not work straight out of the box.

    Steps:

    • We plugged in the GEO Trio IHD and let it run for a few days, the IHD kept stating.
      • Connecting to smart meter …
      • Not commissioned

    • We then contacted Octopus and explained the issue and they asked for a picture of 16 digit code at the base of the GEO Trio IHD unit.

    • Picture was sent and about a day or so later Octopus Energy contacted us to say they are going to perform a remote commission.

    • First Remote commission was partially successful in that the LED Screen changed and now shows a Gas icon, but only Gas reading was visible.

    • We contacted Octopus Energy again and they performed a second remote commission and this time both Gas and Electric meter reading was visible on the GEO Trio IHD.

Hopefully these stages prove useful to other Octopus energy customers who have the new GEO Trio IHD.

Do you have an octopus home mini? It’s a free device they’re handing out that connects to your smart meter and collects live usage data and puts it into the app, so you effectively have the same data in the app as you do the IHD. Since having one the IHD has sat in a drawer

No I didn’t but after watching the video you kindly linked, the Octopus Home Mini looks like a great device that allows the Octopus App to provide detailed live stats on Gas (30 mins) / Electric usage  which includes usage trends and even better if you have EV car charging or use dynamic pricing (which I do via Octopus Tracker).

Octopus Home Mini I suppose can be a challenge for many older users, especially those who aren’t digitally confident and the IHD is a simpler option.

I just checked Octopus website and it states, The ‘Octopus Home Mini is still a beta product’ so will be fun when I order one

Indeed yes the IHD do certainly serve a purpose for a lot of people. The home mini is a great little device and they’re not charging for it, may well be worth putting yourself on the waitlist for one of it’s of interest, just need to have a plug socket somewhere in a reasonable range to your meter that can also reach your wifi network.  I stuck mine on my IOT wifi network just in case.  Easy to set up and then I don’t think about it it just enhances and provides more up to date/live usage info within the octopus app.  Really this is what the smart meters should be providing and octopus are just briging that gap.

I don’t agree with everything Octopus does but this is one of their genuinely customer friendly helpful initiaves.  Alongside when they let people borrow thermal cameras during the winter to track down heat loss in the home for free, that’s worth a go too if you haven’t taken advantage.

No probs, and this was the scheme you can join the waitlist to borrow a thermal camera to look out for heat leaks during the winter. Also free.  I borrowed one a couple years back and found a good few places to fix up

Our new Octopus Home Mini arrived and must say, setting up the Home Mini to integrate with the Octopus App was very simple.

A few app screen shots to help others also considering opting for the free Octopus Home Mini to enable real-time visibility into their electricity usage and 30 minute Gas usage increments via the Octopus App.

Ah you got one through in the end. It’s the only thing I miss having left octopus now. I did see a tweet from them that said it should still work via your octopus app but I’ve not found a way to get any data now that I’ve moved. Keeping hold of mine just in case.
