Thanks, so if I went to the previous version (next one up from current firmware) and then updated to the latest, it wouldn’t need a Factory reset?

    Thanks

In theory your are correct, but if you notice connection issues etc, the a factory reset is the best way forward.

Upgrades should happen seamlessly, but we all realise sometimes coding is not what it could be

Thanks, i saw on another forum some people having issues and having to go back to August firmware so i might hold fire for a bit and see….

Do you know if there is much difference firmware wise for the AX86U and AX86S? As currently thinking setup the 86S the same as 86U, update it to latest firmware and then set it up.ย  If all is ok, then in theory do my 86U and hopefully would be ok too :)

If you look at the ASUS download servers for firmware you will notice that both for the RT-AX86U and S use the same firmware (almost) so issue identified with RT-AX86U will probable be with S also

BTW: what problems are being reported for RT-AX86U ?

Thanks, I saw that but the most recent version of firmware update says just 86U , no mention of the 86S, unlike the previous version which says 86U and 86S so I figured they are not all for both models?ย  I’ve downloaded the previous one in preparation as didn’t want to risk it.

From what I recall from brief looking around, it was devices dropping off WIFI I believe. However some people have said it’s ok so not too sure, guess it depends what devices you have. Just sloghtly concerned due to Nest but fingers crossed it will be ok :)

I’m going to set it up tomorrow as I need to do it all live as the router seems to want me to go through setup stuff, even if choosing manual so I’ll let it do its think when I connect it all live.ย  I need to make a note of some settings etc to re-apply when router is up and running.

    Plan is :-

Set wired and WIFI devices to DHCP (prob be easier incase switching fails, i wont have devices set in wrong IP range)

unplug BT cable from BT smart hub but leave it on so all devices still connected, just no internet.

Setup Draytek & 86S, run through wizard and get it online

    Update to latest firmware

    Turn off features don’t use

Setup main WIFI and Guest WIFI, turn off BT smart hub WIFI and enable on 86S so devices should see no WIFI for a few seconds then see the 86S WIFI and re-connect.

Re-setup few WIFI and wired devices on fixed IP on new router, making sure to just DHCP range to allow for static devices.

    Fingers crossed all goes well.

Absolutely, which is why I said (almost) regarding the communal firmware’s,

Let us know how the plan goes ๐Ÿ‘

    Hi all,

Before removing BTHomeHub, I set all devices to be DHCP and made a note of MAC addresses of all Static devices and static IP and new DHCP address so i can go back and fix there IPs later on.

I switched router by simply unplugging the BT homehub, removing it out the way and removing some other stuff at the same time so ended up taking around an hour to do other bits too.

Then setup the draytek and 86S (configured via phone app) that was all good. I also set the router IP and the DHCP range, to allow for some static IP addresses to be used outside of the DHCP range.

Then went through checking settings, strangely a lot of stuff was as I have it now and I’m sure some of the features were on before so anyway, that was all fine, setup main WIFI and Guest WIFI.

Nest thermostat connected back up by itself, but the heat link didn’t, had to press and hold for 8 seconds until a blue light flashes, then release and it effectively reboots the heat link and then bingo, all was fine.ย  Please not: I don’t have the Nest learning thermostat so that maybe different, i have Nest thermostat-E.

Everything seems to have re-connected that I can tell.

I did a update of the firmware via the router and just clicked firmware update so I presume it went to the latest version so seems ok so far.

One weird thing I have noticed though.. My switch doesn’t register on the router (which is wired) I have the MAC address of it but it doesn’t show up.ย  However, I can access devices plugged into the switch so therefore the switch must be up and running but it doesn’t register on the list of devices, slightly annoying as I’m unable to manage the switch as I don’t know the IP of it, bit strange.ย  ย It’s been on for a while now but still now showing in list of devices plugged in via wired and wireless.

It was showing under DHCP IP address on BT hub before removing it. Bit puzzling but things are up and running which is the main thing.

Will look at the rest when I’m off for xmas I suspect as things are working, just bugging me why switch doesn’t show on the router.

Will see how it goes now, fingers crossed it’s ok :)

Interestingly, my 86S has updated to firmware: 3.0.0.4.386_45934, which looking at Asus’s website, implies it is only for the 86U and that 45898 is for 86S and 86U.

    Maybe I have a 86U in disguise :)

They are probably only late for 86S or just forgotten to update their servers for this model.

If they got one fw for both that will be so in future too.
Make CRC check for them and you will see they are identically bit for bit.
    Only file name may differ.

But this site shows them both the same called RT-AX86 series.
    RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S): https://www.asus.com/Networking-IoT-Servers/WiFi-6/All-series/RT-AX86U/HelpDesk_Download/

So why do you think it would be for one of them only?

    Hiya,

I think it is the description that is confusing and implies only for the specified version as show here:-

    Version 3.0.0.4.386.45934
    2021/11/11ย 75.29 MBytes
    ASUS RT-AX86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.386.45934
    1. Fixed Let’s encrypt related bugs.
    2. Fixed httpd vulnerability
    3. Fixed stack overflow vulnerability
    4. Fixed DoS vulnerability
Thanks for the contribution of Fans0nใ€le3d1ngใ€Mwenใ€daliy yang from 360 Future Security Labs

    Compared to:-

    Version 3.0.0.4.386.45898
    2021/10/07ย 74.98 MBytes
    ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.386.45898
1.Fixed AiMesh web page multi-language issues.
    2.Fixed Stored XSS vulnerability.
    3.Fixed CVE-2021-41435, CVE-2021-41436.
Thanks to Efstratios Chatzoglou, University of the Aegean
Georgios Kambourakis, European Commission at the European Joint Research Centre

As you can see, one lists 86U and 86S and one just says 86U so implies not for the 86S, only the 86U.

Just a naming issue of the firmware file, you may ignore it and your router should find new firmware anyhow.

Thanks, yes router will update ok, it’s only if you want to download the file and manually update i.e. if you need to go back or there is a known issue with the latest version and you want to get the one before :)

    Thanks again.

filename is not relevant, you may rename to whatever you like.

before writing to router it is checked by software to match router.

    Hi all,

Just noticed new firmware for RT-AX86U router, Version 3.0.0.4.386.46061 release 11/01/2022.

Interestingly, in the details of this update, it mentions “Fixed AiMesh guest network issues.”

Does anyone know what the issues were on guestnet? anyone tested this release?

    Thanks

    Kev
