I will give it another day or so, then chase them if they do not get in contact with you. I can only push my luck so far with them?
Thanks, hope they haven’t introduced new bugs.

November 20, 2018 at 12:01 am #1554Beta 586 was using far too much cpu. Both cores were maxing out almost every time I looked. Gone back to 585. It seems much better. Asus seemed to stop talking to me after I refused them remote access.

November 20, 2018 at 4:16 am #1555Ouch!, so ASUS Engineer is saying, AiProtection can/could reduce you internet speed, so ASUS are selling a unit that is suitable for G.fast speeds, but only if you do not use AiProtection (maybe).? I do not blame you for not assisting any further, but thank you for trying
Edit: I spoke with ASUS and they say Your email said, you would look into it, so best let them know your decision also?
Yeah i replied that i could not do further testing due to the impact on my line, as i have no idea when the DLM resets itself. If it takes more than 2 months though BT will be getting a nice… phone call :)
I did stress in the email back to ASUS though that i was concerned that they’re advising customers to turn off a protection feature to achieve full speeds and turn it on when finished downloading. It should work regardless. People should be able to setup their modem/router and forget about it, not constantly going in and changing things etc.
I mentioned that i reverted back to 503 as that has been perfectly stable for me, no issues like others have faced like DHCP, wireless and stuff. I also told the engineer that they should analyse 503 and work from there and see what has been done to the ai protection and they said they’re going to do that, and they will notify me if there is any discovery. At this present time im feeling very sceptical.

November 20, 2018 at 7:09 pm #1561I am back on beta585. DLM has now given me full sync speed with a bit of room to Max rate. Surprising as it’s been freezing cold for the past 2-3 days.
Are these error counts acceptable for VDSL2?

November 20, 2018 at 8:13 pm #1563FEC are a result of Interleaving and usually means all is well, you numbers over a 12 hour period are nothing exceptional, when you say get a million, every 10 minutes, then time to investigate
If you are still worried, you could plug your router into the test socket located behind your master socket faceplate, change the microfilter and record the new stats?
It is the CRC that you need to keep an eye on, just incase there is to much noise on the line, yours stats are fine at moment, but keep an eye on CRC/s and if the rate per day increases etc.

Thanks, I will keep an eye on the CRC and ES errors. What level is considered normal?

November 21, 2018 at 8:38 am #1565That is a tricky question, the old DSl-AC68U with its Mediatek CHipset was prone to creat very high CRS/FEC compared to say a Broadcom DSL Chipset and LAntic based DSL Modem routers are exact opposite (Fritz!Box, as my Fritz!Box 3490 prodiced only 1 or 2 every other day or so.
It is also dependant on you line length, DSL line condition, and whether the line, for example is mounted on a pole, and being bashed by tree branches etc. or underground like mine is.
If you start receiving a few hundred every few hours, where as previously, you received very few, then this is an indication, something is not well with your line

November 21, 2018 at 5:18 pm #1568Well having thought long and hard about it I’ve decided to cut my losses and replace this router with a Netgear Orbi rbk23. After this poor experience I just couldn’t bring myself to ‘reward’ Asus with more of my money on another one of their routers.
As the Orbi does not have a modem I plan to still use the 88u in bridge mode, does anyone know if AI protection still works in this mode?

Don’t make decisions while you are upset, what I mean is that what you are saying could be true but not all of it, you have to realize that be Asus or XYZ company none of them have feelings, they all care about money, that said, I would recommend you to return your DSL-AC88U and get a RT-AC86U, I got mine yesterday and that thing with Merlin firmware is a beast, these dual processors @1.8GHz have no match in the market for ÂŁ150, don’t be silly and do what’s best for you, not what feels sentimentally right ;-)
I have my RT-AC86U connected to a cable modem which is on bridge mode, works like a charm.

November 21, 2018 at 5:34 pm #1570Also, there is no better combination at the moment of Firmware support + hardware than RMerlin + Asus, it is an important distinction, hardware alone in my experience means nothing without a good firmware, and that’s what you get when you go with RMerlin which is open source and proven to give an extra value to the Asus routers.
Hopefully I can convince you with this video:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdZ–B4fDPc

I would assume AiProtection will not work whist DSL-AC88U is in Bridge mode, I can if you wish drop ASUS an email and ask?
FYI – ASUS DSL-AC88U in Bridge mode does not support the allocation (separation) of VLAN ID’s (802.1Q) this would need to be handled by router

November 21, 2018 at 5:44 pm #1572Not upset anymore, just facing the truth. I’ve no confidence what so ever that this router will ever be as it was hyped up to be. Hopefully I am wrong but I just can’t see it being the case.
Sure I could maybe return it (with an associated amount of hassle no doubt) but to be honest I just can’t be bothered with the grief.
I’ve already ordered the Netgear Orbi so I’m going to roll with that and see what happens, I can always return it hassle free via Amazon if it doesn’t work out. If Asus do ever fix this router I can always just use the Orbi in AP mode along with it.

November 21, 2018 at 5:54 pm #1573Well, it is not a matter of faith, it is a well known fact that Asus RT vs Asus DSL difference is like the sun vs the moon, I had an excellent experience with:
- RT-AC56U
- RT-AC3200
- And now RT-AC2900 (AC86U)
I returned the DSL-AC88U via Amazon because I realized their DSL routers suck, that part is a fact, will they fix it? maybe, but for what I have seen I can’t be bothered, I know what works and what has been problematic, that’s all I can tell you.
