Update link as follows: 2020_12_04_v9.1.2.3_906-g96e2b5b https://www.asuswebstorage.com/navigate/a/#/s/169819C89B2842A0A1C8397F628A2B22Y Note: I will amend above posts to reflect this new link and not all the usual models have been updated ? See attachment below for list of updated DSL (MediaTeK) units

Is this a stable version or a beta version? I don’t see it available on the website or in the router update page yet. Any changelog? Thanks!

Edit: I’ve just seen it in the first message. I read only the second one. Beta and changelog. I’ll test the lcp-echo-adaptive feature once the stable version is released.

So ASUS have contacted me this morning and please see below in reference to ‘lcp-echo-adaptive’ ——– only DSL-AC68U and DSL-AX82U support this option but not other DSL models. All RT models supports lcp-echo-adaptive . This option would be supported at the next release of DSL models. ——- We got there in the end and glad the ‘lcp-echo-adaptive’ option will be available on all ASUS DSL models going forward

Thanks! That was fast! I’ll let you know how it works once it’s released.

Did you set Internet Detection to PPPE Echo ?

Sure. I’ve set it the same way you did.

I tried it before posting it because I found it on the Internet. I’ve just tried again with no luck, I get the following message:

    syslog: unrecognized option ‘lcp-echo-adaptive’

My router is DSL-N16 with the latest stable version 1.1.2.3_858.

Does Asus plan to support lcp-echo-adaptive option for pppd?

I will play a bit with both options to try to find two values that avoid false positives and at the same time measure the real drops. Anyway I think this is a weird behaviour. Do you think this could be a firmware matter?

Understood. I’ve set PPP Echo Interval and PPP Echo Max Failures to 0 and now the connection seems stable.  I guess setting both to 0 means the router ignores the failures… Am I right? What happens if both values are set to 0 and the WAN connection really drops? The router would detect it and would try to start a new WAN session?

    Hello,

I’m writing again to update about the issue I had some months ago. The WAN connection was dropping, but not the DSL line, when downloading at max. speed. I thought it could be related with ESET, the Ethernet connection or even the driver, and I thought I fixed because connection kept stable for a while… but I really didn’t. So I gave up and I used a new router I got.

Two weeks ago I decided to give a last chance to my Asus DSL-16 and I started to search on the Internet about the issue. I found people commenting the PPP Echo function for the Internet Detection causes the WAN disconnection: they say that when downloading at the max. speed the line can support, the router can’t even manage the PPP echo requests because the full bandwith is occupied and the echo fails, so when it fails X times in a row the router drops the WAN connection because it thinks the connection is down when it isn’t. So let’s say it’s a false positive.

I also remembered what you told me about writing ‘lcp-echo-interval 0’ in the additional pppd options, but that didn’t work at all. So I noticed the router has its own option for Internet Detection (Disable/Echo PPP), PPP Echo Interval and PPP Echo Max Failures. So I tested writing a 0 in both, PPP Echo Interval and PPP Echo Max Failures and for now I’m more than one week with zero disconnections. It looks you were right! Anyway, I’m not sure if this is a “normal” behaviour or it should be tuned by Asus on the firmware…

Now I got two doubts about it:

    1. ¿What’s the difference between setting PPP Echo Interval/PPP Echo Max Failures  to 0 and setting Internet Detection as Disable?
    2. ¿What happens if the WAN connection really drops but I’ve set PPP Echo Interval/PPP Echo Max Failures  to 0 or Internet Detection as Disable? ¿The router wouldn’t detect the WAN connection is down? ¿How does the router react on these cases?

    Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I’ve just tested with a laptop connected via Ethernet. It worked well, WAN connection didn’t drop with the laptop. The laptop has Windows 10 (1803), my PC has Windows 10 (1809). I compared the drivers and they were different: laptop had 10.1.505.2015, PC had 10.31.828.2018. I unistalled the driver and I installed the same driver that the laptop has: WAN connection didn’t drop. So to confirm if it was the driver I unistalled it and I installed the latest one again, 10.31.828.2018: WAN connection isn’t dropping now and the behaviour is like on the laptop.

This is so weird. I don’t know if it’s the driver, Windows 10 (1809), the router, all… And I don’t know how Windows or a driver can make the WAN connection drop… I don’t think that’s normal anyway. I’m gonna wait a week or so to make sure all keep stable now because I don’t know what else to try.

I’ll let you know. Thanks again.

No, I’m sorry, I haven’t a second PC or laptop at the moment. I’ll try to get a laptop from a friend in the next hours to test it. I’ve already tried with two different Ethernet cables and there’s no difference.

    Interesting, who is your ISP?

My ISP is Pepephone, it’s part of MasMovil group.

Only a thought, is router new or from Ebay and maybe worth setting the windows device (at PC)with a Static (fixed) IP address, to see if this helps?

It is a new router. I tested setting a static IP inside the DHCP range, outside and with DHCP reservation on the router too. The WAN connection has just dropped some minutes ago while I was watching a TV channel on streaming with the same messages on the log I pasted…

Yes, network cable is the same one. When I tried to sent the feedback form I got “The system failed to connect to the mail server(possibly caused by your ISP blocked SMTP port 25)”. I sent an e-mail with the content to the address xdsl_feedback@asus.com as the message said. I hope it’s okay that way. Thank you for your time on this case.

it could help, the DSL-N16 is an old model and I seem to remember back in the day, on some ISP, the default 30a profile caused issues in certain countries exchanges/DSLAM, give it a try?

I tried it but it didn’t help.

Is QoS enabled? if so, disable and see ?

    It is disabled.

Go to wan> internet connection> edit
You will find a regulation that says
    additional pppd options
    Get the command
    lcp-echo-interval 0
If 0 does not connect to your dslam try instead 0, 30, 40, 60 but first 0
I believe that even if this method does not help, it may help reduce your problem

I did it and it connected to the DSLAM quickly. I had the feeling that the WAN connection kept up for some seconds more, but nothing else. The result was the same, WAN connection dropped and before that happened I was losing packets all the time. Here’s a screenshot:

    https://i.snag.gy/iR0QKA.jpg

The weirdest part is that this is happening only under Windows for any reason, I don’t get it…
