One thing I just noticed, when I connect remotely via the VPN, I’m unable to access the Draytek modem, however I can when I’m on the lan, is it possible to access the modem via the vpn at all? Just curious if anyone has done this before.

Hi all,

Just to update, I managed to get OpenVPN to work on the 86S :)  I left the VPN IP as the default ones and I’m now able to access the router when connected from a different location :)

Just out of curiosity, when I enabled DDNS on the router, it came up with a really long string, how do I go about changing that and registering a more rememberable name?

Also, is there a site I can log into to check what the IP is associated with the asusddns?

Yeah, I think BT have cottoned on to people signing up to cheaper deals at black Friday and then renewing at black Friday so they probably realised they are loosing money but not many people paying there standard prices, even though I’m sure they are still making a good amount of money even wit the black Friday deals.

Mine is up in May so fingers crossed they have some other deals/discounts out then :)

I think this is why they went 18 month contracts to stop people renewing on Black Friday or discount periods but now they gone 24 months so means you still could renew at black Friday but you will be tied in for longer and also be tied into the annual price increases.

Yeah, gonna keep going with the laptop for now, when needed.  Have a desktop PC which is even older (10 years approx) so going to upgrade that next year, just bought a smaller case (took weeks of checking website for it to become available) as I don’t need a full tower now so got that, now just got to decide on components and go from there but not planning to do it until mid next year at the earliest, have to wait and see what is available and the cost and decide then.

Thanks, will keep that in mind, I’ve shelved the idea of a replacement laptop for another time, as might as well wait till laptops ship with Win 11 rather than Win 11 Ready :)

Thanks @grisu, yeah I knew about the ram and the port, i just thought maybe some menus/screens would have missing options :)

All good though, being the same is ideal a easier to apply changes to both :)

So far so good, not really seen much in way of difference between the 86S and 86U, I thought I may see some visual differences i.e. some options not present etc but nothing I’ve come across so far.

At present, with not all my devices connected as I don’t need them all on, I’m using 344mb of 512mb ram and CPU is low, less than 5%.

Hopefully this is about normal :)

Thanks, yes router will update ok, it’s only if you want to download the file and manually update i.e. if you need to go back or there is a known issue with the latest version and you want to get the one before :)

As you can see, one lists 86U and 86S and one just says 86U so implies not for the 86S, only the 86U.

Interestingly, my 86S has updated to firmware: 3.0.0.4.386_45934, which looking at Asus’s website, implies it is only for the 86U and that 45898 is for 86S and 86U.

Maybe I have a 86U in disguise :)

Hi all,

Before removing BTHomeHub, I set all devices to be DHCP and made a note of MAC addresses of all Static devices and static IP and new DHCP address so i can go back and fix there IPs later on.

I switched router by simply unplugging the BT homehub, removing it out the way and removing some other stuff at the same time so ended up taking around an hour to do other bits too.

Then setup the draytek and 86S (configured via phone app) that was all good. I also set the router IP and the DHCP range, to allow for some static IP addresses to be used outside of the DHCP range.

Then went through checking settings, strangely a lot of stuff was as I have it now and I’m sure some of the features were on before so anyway, that was all fine, setup main WIFI and Guest WIFI.

Nest thermostat connected back up by itself, but the heat link didn’t, had to press and hold for 8 seconds until a blue light flashes, then release and it effectively reboots the heat link and then bingo, all was fine.  Please not: I don’t have the Nest learning thermostat so that maybe different, i have Nest thermostat-E.

Everything seems to have re-connected that I can tell.

I did a update of the firmware via the router and just clicked firmware update so I presume it went to the latest version so seems ok so far.

One weird thing I have noticed though.. My switch doesn’t register on the router (which is wired) I have the MAC address of it but it doesn’t show up.  However, I can access devices plugged into the switch so therefore the switch must be up and running but it doesn’t register on the list of devices, slightly annoying as I’m unable to manage the switch as I don’t know the IP of it, bit strange.   It’s been on for a while now but still now showing in list of devices plugged in via wired and wireless.

It was showing under DHCP IP address on BT hub before removing it. Bit puzzling but things are up and running which is the main thing.

Will look at the rest when I’m off for xmas I suspect as things are working, just bugging me why switch doesn’t show on the router.

Will see how it goes now, fingers crossed it’s ok :)

im on the August firmware on 86u, not setup the 86S yet, been busy making notes of settings on 86U so can setup the 86S the same and also been going through making a note of static devices info and then setting those to dhcp.

i’ve got 1 device showing on but router I need to track down as I’m not sure what it is. Bthub labelled it a smart phone but that it isn’t or a iPad so trying to work out what it is. Everything else has been updated.

i have 1 IP for Nest-E, the heat link I don’t *think* connects to WiFi, think it connect to the thermostat so that should be fine (I know parents nest thermostat learning talks to the link by threads, not sure bout Nest e but will try find it tomorrow.

LOL sorry… gets confusion.

So scenario is this..

Parents have RT-AX86U – which I will setup VPN on so that I can access things to assist when I’m not there.

I’m getting the RT-AX86S – which I will also setup VPN on so I can access my place remotely from parents.

This will help assist when base station for VOIP wont register with provider etc – which has happened once since parents signed up.

So the plan is, I’ll be able to access either location from being at either location, if that makes sense?  The VPN will only be establish when needed so it wont be up 24/7 etc.

So I’ve setup VPN on parents router and hence didn’t see that option, which appeared to be on AC86 having read the thread so i guess its changed now? or perhaps they were running a different firmware on the router, i didn’t notice them mention anything.

Just thought I’d ask regarding it and see.

So essentially I’ll be able to create a VPN from

AX86U to AX86S

AX86S to AX86U

but only one will be active at any one time.
