How has the unit been so far @El3rt1cal? Are you running it as it came from ASUS or loaded Merlin on it?
I’m tempted to by one but a little weary due to the usual teething problems until its been out a while :)

Would be interested to know when brought from :) Does the DSL-AX82U also work with a external modem i.e. can turn off inbuilt one? If so, this maybe the best option for me at present, use inbuilt modem and then if I ever go FTTP, turn inbuilt modem off and plug cable from FTTP modem into the wan port?
Need to look at some more reviews but I’m thinking this maybe be simplest option at present and by the time FTTP becomes affordable, might be time for a new router anyway :)
Thanks

Thanks, good to know :)
My fear was the router would come up, try to connect fail and then do nothing after say 3 goes and be waiting a reboot before it came back up if modem took longer than router.
Does the vigour often drop connection (apart from ISP disconnecting and re-connecting every few days) or is it pretty stable? I saw some posts on another forum about users switching to the draytek and then getting slower speeds and they were told to keep it connected for a while and speed should restore, something to do with ISP noticing a different modem? think it was something to do with InterleaveDelay ?
Thanks

out of interest, if the power goes out and then it comes back on, Will the router connect to the modem if it has booted up before the modem does? Will it continue to keep trying to connect to the modem or would I need to reboot the router once the modem is up?
At present with the built in modem/router, I don’t have to worry about this as it comes back online but with 2 different devices, just thought i’d check.
Thanks

Hi,
Many thanks @uk sentinel for doing the test, didn’t realise you had to reset/wipe what you had, hope you didn’t loose any settings and didn’t take up too much of your time.
interest, did you turn on the “Special requirements for ISP ” or was it not needed to be enabled?
Looks like I’ll be going for the Draytek 130 then as no need for 2 ports :)
Many thanks indeed. Just now to make a decision on which router to buy. AX-86U is looking promising in terms of spec and speeds but it is the older looking one as opposed to the newer 82U style. Was considering the AX88U but that appears to be nearly £300 which I can’t really justify on a router. So it’s either 82U or 86U I think.
Going to read some more reviews and then make a decision.
Thanks again for all your help!

Hi,
So i posted on a different forum also and someone has replied advising they there is a “Special requirements for ISP ” , make sure that is set to “ON” and then simply call the modem in a browser using the default IP address 192.168.2.1 will allow me to access the modem stats using a Vigor 130 and not needing to plug in a laptop directly to the modem etc.
Just wondering if anyone here has tried it and if it works? I’m told the option exists on the RT-AX86U and other Asus routers so i’m now looking at the Vigor 130 instead of the 166 as if this does indeed work, no need for the 2nd port and vlan etc :)
Thanks

Hi,
Yes, basically all my wired connections (PC, TV, Apple TV box etc) are all connected to the HP 18-10G switch. Hence my idea to put 2 ports in VLAN2 and then hope router would route between the 2 but seems now.
Can you change the IP address on the modem port? I didn’t see any info on how to do this.
So i presume I leave port 1 modem as default IP, plug into router and change the modem port 2 to be same IP range as rest of my network (192.168.1.x) and then can access it ok? Meaning leave HP 18-10 in existing setup (no VLAN2 192.168.2.x) needed.
Thanks

Thanks all for info, will check them out.
Here is a quick diagram to show how I am hoping to connect the router/modem up and also be able to access modem stats from main machine in 192.168.1.x network. Will the router auto route between the 2 networks?
Thanks
Kev

I’m hoping so, i saw it at 0.5 bar in December and now its dropped to roughly 0.3bar. Its always been above 1 bar so unsure what’s changed, don’t see any leaks anywhere. From what i can tell, my boiler will stop working if it gets below 0.3bar so having topped it up to just over 1 bar, I’m going to now monitor it and see if it drops any more. I’ve had it a good few years now ad it’s never given me any issue, serviced yearly, just runs as it should, even at 0.3bar, still no error codes being reported so will see how it goes. If it continues to drop then I’ll have to get someone in to take a look at it, however as summer is coming, if it isn’t too cold, i may not tell now until Winter comes round again so will have to see.

Just found out today my boiler has decided to loose pressure, it was around 1bar for last 5 years but just before xmas, it dropped to 0.5 and now today it was at 0.2 so I’ve topped it back up and now waiting to see but new router etc may be put on hold if i need to repair boiler / replace, going to see how it goes and keep an eye on it.
I only noticed by sheer chance as pressure gauge is underneath boiler so not something you can see unless you get down and look underneath it, which i seldom do. Bit of a poor design tbh in that regard but apart from that boiler been solid, n issues at all – even though 0.2,still no error message on display etc, bit odd. So will keep an eye but will likely push back my router upgrade plans, how much will depending on how much to fix but thanks for everyone’s help so far!

Thanks, would he 166 work on my line or does it require over 100mb line to work? All references point to max 300mb but no actual minimum so not sure.
Thanks

Hi all,
So I have been thinking, if the ASUS router wont show the line details i.e. connection speed etc, I was thinking if i got the Draytek 166, it has 2 ports, I could plug one port into the router to get internet access etc (main network on 192.168.0.x) and then perhaps plug the 2nd network port into my HP 18-10 switch, configured for vlan 2 i believe the draytek is on 192.168.2.x network? Then i could set another port on the switch to vlan 2 also and plug that directly into my router too. Would I then be able to access the web page of the router from my machine? i.e. he router would route between the 2 networks?
So effectively would look like:-
Draytek 166 port 1 -> Asus RT router (192.168.0.x)
HP switch (connects all wired wired devices from 192.168.0.x subnet) -> Asus Router
Draytek 166 port 2 -> HP switch port configured for 192.168.2.x network
another port on HP switch configured for 192.168.2.0 subnet -> ASUS router
In hopes it routes between 192.168.0.x and 192.168.2.x network so can access webpage of modem from PC in 192.168.0.x network to avoid needing to go to physical modem and connect a laptop or similar device to check it if required to see details?
Thanks

ah, terrific thanks!
I saw some info online saying they put the BT username/pswd in the draytek 130 so thats where i got the info from.
Glad its plug and play sounds much easier if info put in router :)
Thanks.
Still checking out options but so far for AX86U and AX82U on my list :) Going to compare prices, seems 86U is out of stock in fair number of places but the AX82U is in stock so will see what happens when i finally dial in my decision.
Thanks again for your help and information. Will be in touch when I compile a complete list and then reduce it down to my final options :) Just gather research/info atm.
Oh BTW – Can the AX86U & AX82U create a VPN tunnel to another of the same model router? I’m thinking i might get one for parents place and then create a VPN tunnel (when needed, not constantly connected) for transferring over any files. Considering using it as a way of storing important files in an alternate location on the NAS there as plenty of space available and wouldn’t be massive storage, probably only couple of gig of critical files initially and then just updates as and when required, maybe once a week or similar. This way no need for cloud storage fees etc.
