Yes RTFM
, they use different default IP on newer routers 50.1 instead of 1.1 on older routers. You find it in manual and help.RTFM indeed

Didn’t notice the downstream router should be using the WAN port, doh!

Superb performance from the router but still to try out Wifi6 (phone and laptop support natively). The RT-AC88U I tried to connect as an AiMesh Node but it wanted 192.168.1.1 on boot (same as RT-AX88U)… can’t be a*sed for the rest of the day. May look into tomorrow when the natives are all sleeping and no moaning about no internet….
The RT-AX88U arrived quickly, are / have you flashed the any of your two routers with ASUSWRT-Merlin ? Families and Internet access

Yep, both on latest Merlin. The RT-AX88U was on 192.168.50.1 out of the box (factory). Couldn’t find it initially.
I run PiHole on a Linux Mint machine as DHCP/DNS which makes swapping out routers fairly quick – and no ads on the network to boot.

What I didn’t screen capture was that I forwarded your email to ASUS with my message at the top. Pretty sure they would have spotted your email in mine. An extra reminder directly from yourself can’t harm anything surely.

Received the £60 DSL-AC88U, supposedly wouldn’t turn on. Works fine for me…. user error me thinks.

Is there any component of the current 591 build firmware (debug or otherwise) that’s available as source from ASUS? Given its a Linux implementation surely there should be parts of it available under GNU licensing? Should I be taking this query to ASUS directly?
Have begun sniffing around build 591 with binwalk..

Seems all to be going well. I had previously tried a Draytek bridge > RT-AC88U and wasn’t impressed. This setup seems to be performing really well.
Worth it just for this info: The 15yr old has specific instructions to turn Xbox off at midnight and go to bed at a sensible time. Looking at the graph seems like Xbox (there’s a router block rule for his xbox at 12am) and then traffic is Youtube on the lounge tv till 3am and then probably on his phone till about 5am’ish.

Have switched to a Openreach HG612 3B with unlocked FW bridged to a RT-AC88U with Merlin 384.19 which frees up the DSL-AC88U. Also managed to get another DSL-AC88U for £60 so no excuse now to explore Merlin FW for DSL-AC88U. Shame I’m back to work tomorrow…
We’ll see how long this HG612 > RT-AC88U lasts when the natives wake up and complain about things not working… lol.

Would need to look out the Technicolor VDSL supplied by Zen, to keep the natives happy while I tinker with the DSL-AC88U.
Interesting project though – will look into setting a build environment for it and evaluate next steps.

So I’m now thinking about switching the DSL-AC88U to bridge mode and using the RT-AC88U (latest Merlin FW) as the main router and Wifi provider for the house. Wifi 6 isn’t important right now.
Worth trying out?

Time to move on then. Was hoping for an ASUS solution, guess not then.
