So I had a chat with ASUS and they “ASUS” are going to rename the option “Android Phone” and call it “Legacy” this will be suitable for both Android and iOS mobile devices etc. going forward. Note: The option name “Android phone” should work with iPhone already, just the naming convention was not correct (it will be going forward)
———- The option name “Android Phone” will be updated to “Legacy” in later firmware. Use this option for iPhone. ———Interesting choice to call tethering legacy – is it legacy really? what’s a more modern non-legacy choice to tethering? Bizarre!
Thanks for following that up though, good to know it’s a UI thing and that iPhone should now work. That’s a really useful feature, it’s nice to know ASUS are still working to bring new features to the device.
Also, just for reference, I reset and updated to the latest firmware again and the synch speed dropped back down 2.something mbps sitting at 57.6mb Not a lot admittedly but it seems there is a difference that’s within that firmware.

TBH – 2Mb is not worth a discussion with ASUS but the iPhone option is interesting. Changelog for 3.0.0.4.388_22048 details ‘Added iPhone USB tethering connection support’ is this what you are referring to ?. and as you say, when UI section for USB tethering is open, no reference to iPhone was obvious. Anybody else noticed this with their DSL-AX82U ?
Indeed that was the thing that piqued my interest in the new version – there’s been a few times that would have come in handy when my dsl line went down.

Ok I installed the prior firmware. There was a 2 mbps boost to synch rate at the same SNR. Not exactly back up to where I was before, but a boost nonetheless.
Additionally if anything is going to be fed back to ASUS – I notice in the release notes for the latest version they included support for iPhone 4G tethering. When I checked (before I reverted the fw) in USB Application > 3G/4G the options were still USB modem or Android Phone. If support for iPhone has indeed now been included, it wasn’t reflected within the UI section for USB tethering.

I notice there is a newer dsl firmware in the latest version though so maybe that’s part of it.
As SNR values are the same, very likely DSL driver, if you do revert back and sync rate increases, let us know as I will let ASUS know also

I’ve never reverted back a fw version of this, do I just upload the older one in the same was as an upgrade? And doing a normal upgrade it keeps all settings – will this do the same or need to input them all again?

Has anyone noticed a lower sync speed on the latest firmware?.
Regarding Sync rate, has you SNR values changed ?
SNR margin remains at 3.1 which it was at before?

I haven’t tried re-loading the old firmware yet – i’ve been wanting to not cause too many reboots/disconnections in case it drops the line any further. I’ll try re-loading the old one shortly though. I notice there is a newer dsl firmware in the latest version though so maybe that’s part of it.

Has anyone noticed a lower sync speed on the latest firmware?
I used to synch at 64mbps and now it won’t go above 58 :/

This is going to sound like a rather dumb question. But is that VPN support for running your own VPN or will it allow you to utilise another VPN service such as NordVPN directly from your router?
Edit: ignore me, i’ve just discovered the router already supports this. Can’t believe I didn’t check before.

Ah so if I were to add a ax82u as a mesh node i’d lose the 5ghz functionality for clients as that would be reserved for backhaul? I didn’t consider that!

Can anyone recommend a good cost effective router to pair with this one as a mesh?
Presumably the ones that would not impact speed would be either an identical dsl-ax82u, or the similar rt-ax82u. Are there any others?

thanks, I have the 80/20 service. I think it’s been 3 days since I last rebooted, I think I did it when I disabled SRA recently as I think openreach doesn’t support it and I read somewhere having it enabled can cause some problems.
