The only really big jumps in ping I can see only when my son uploading videos to YouTube, otherwise no issues was observed. However this time of the day nobody don’t use Internet in my house 😂, only me don’t sleep with my wife because littleun woke up for bottle and not fancy go back sleep 🙄

December 29, 2019 at 5:29 pm #5593unloaded 9ms and loaded 15ms = bloat of 6ms , that’s far great compared to 50ms ( lets say your playing games or doing latency sensitive work …. during that time .. somebody starts downloading or uploading photos or videos or watching netflix .. with QOS on you will see increase of 6ms+ with QOS off you will see increase of 50ms+ depending on load … through i can be wrong testing is only way to be sure :D )
I did checked with QOS on and not much difference, maybe other devices don’t use my current internet bandwidth ? I mean ping is not lower it’s pretty much the same, of course I rebooted router once setup QOS. It looks only much better on test, other than that I can’t see much difference. Will see how much improvement will be while uploading video on YouTube.

January 3, 2020 at 7:02 pm #5616I was playing with few different settings on QOS and actually the best results I got if I limit speed for my pc(and my son only). I set limit on downstream for 62Mb/s and upstream for 15Mb/s. Ping unloaded on Fast 10ms loaded 12-13ms. Playing online ping nice and stable.

January 9, 2020 at 1:09 pm #5689Hey @XRW
Did you tried latest alpha build from this week, not that I complain about 384.13, but apparently is very stable. 🤔

January 9, 2020 at 3:13 pm #5693no i have not tested new 384.15 alpha firmware , i have been testing latest ASUS Stock 3.0.0.4.384.7968.
Merlin firmware 384.15 use GPL of ASUS RT-AX88U for firmware 3.0.0.4.384.7756 .. which is old ..
currently everything is working fine for you ..so there is no need to jump on new aplha firmware ..unless you feel something is not running correctly as per your needs

January 9, 2020 at 6:47 pm #5694384.15 alpha is reported to be very stable, worth to try it more than any stock firmware.

February 4, 2020 at 7:14 pm #5934The problem with the latest 384.15 is it massively degrades 2.4ghz performance. Only a single antenna (the rear left closest to switch port 8) transmits the 2.4ghz signal after flashing this firmware. No good if you have a ton on IoT devices like me that only work on the 2.4ghz band (such as ring cameras).

February 4, 2020 at 7:41 pm #5935I guess you talking about last beta build? I tried one of the alpha builds and my wifi go crazy, of course I done only dirty flash from 384.13 but apparently wifi driver was already updated on alpha builds and was recommended to do reset to factory defaults and start from scratch. To be honest I don’t want to mess (again) with all my devices in home to forget network on each and pair them again, so I back to my favourite 384.13 which is really stable and all working for me.
Trouble is that Merlin can’t do nothing about wifi driver as this is Asus mess and he have no control of that. All rest he fixed, but what is a point of that? I was going to try latest beta but after feedback, especially issues with wifi, I’m not fancy at the moment.

February 4, 2020 at 10:57 pm #5936It was the same in the 384.15 alpha too. The wifi driver in anything beyond 384.14 is trash, which as you correctly point out, is closed source and therefore beyond rmerlin’s control. Judging by the comments on the official firmware thread on smallnetbuilder.com its not any better with the later gpl either so I’ll probably be stuck on 384.14 for a while.
I wouldn’t waste time resetting your router and trying it, you’ll only achieve an evening of wasted time for your efforts. I’ve already confirmed the fault is there for other users anyway, so not just my router affected.
The crippling of the 2.4ghz band so that only a single antenna transmits reduces the overall signal strength a fair bit. This is especially bad for me with the ring cameras as I rely on an external WiFi cable running from the router to an outside antenna to provide the signal. With this change I can either have a good signal inside, or one outside, but not both.

The updated (Update Adaptive QoS categories) sounds interesting but no mention of any wifi fixes as I remember the RT-AX88U had 2.4GHz issues / signal strength ?

April 1, 2020 at 2:06 pm #6308Could you ask Asus if there was any changes to wifi driver, or do they planing to add to futures updates.

Alas, limited contact with ASUS at the moment so need to conserve my favours

April 5, 2020 at 8:55 am #6317Ok, today I managed to flash latest asus fw over Merlin 384.13, and is really nice and smooth. I didn’t changed even single settings, pure dirty flash and all working great. Didn’t tested on games online but so far so good. For me it looks like issue with WiFi was fixed on this fw. Soon all my family will start using internet so that will be a good test for it 😜
