Unfortunately I had similar issue when rt-ax88u came to my house and I have to update wifi drivers on all laptops and pc in my house. One thing you can try is to create guest network for 2.4Ghz and see if that will work.
June 15, 2020 at 3:02 pm #8053Also look under Advanced Settings > Wireless > General is an option for ‘Wireless Mode’ Select N for 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz and create new SSID just for that legacy laptop.
I think as @Mrk26 said, Guest option with Wireless Mode set to N should work if that option is available via guest wifi, but I think guest wifi does not allow access to local printers etc, only internet access.

June 15, 2020 at 3:09 pm #8054OK thanks for the tips
The laptop was blocked from acessing wifi printers etc anyway so guest network sounds like the way to go for simple internet access.

August 1, 2020 at 2:25 pm #8747Hi @Mrk26 – thanks for update news, some are saying there maybe issues with ISP’s DHCP and some Wireless N clients are struggling with AX radios enabled ?
Let us know how yours RT-AX88U works out with this latest firmware if you have not switched to ASUSWRT-Merlin already ;-)

August 1, 2020 at 9:32 pm #8772I have connected several different devices and no issues at all, nice and stable like previous official build.
I used Merlin fw on mine a while ago and once switched to previous official fw didn’t have a chance to messing around. Can’t really afford any possibly unstable builds especially where I still working from home so stable broadband connection is a key.
August 2, 2020 at 6:59 am #8783stable broadband is very important, thanks for letting us know how good the new ASUS RT-AX88U firmware build is, good to know the build is good

I think we all appreciate peace of mind from time to time
It’s nice to see that this router is supported properly by Asus.
August 20, 2020 at 7:15 pm #9213I read this on SNBForums the other day, almost got worried I did. (RMerlin a little unhappy with ASUS (RT) models development/release cycles)

August 20, 2020 at 9:07 pm #9214I read something similar in different topic where Merlin was upset with the way how Asus upgrade fw on routers, but that is the only problem for Merlin because he tried hard to push updates to older routers which Asus slowly left behind.

I hope ASUS are working hard to keep @RMerlin onside with there newer 386 GPL releases ,
