From 67% ram use to 69%. FWIW from memory both figures are better than it has been previously, however the device has only been up for 24 hours or so.
It is is really difficult to gauge CPU use as core use fluctuates, so there is a health warning with these numbers. With an 8Mb/s BT download of a Linux distro and None or an OpenVPN tunnel:
5% or less increase on baseline core 1 use and 5% typically to 10% max occasionally on the other cores. (core 1 peaking at 90 in both cases, core 2 and 3 getting up to 25% at most but typically fluctuating between 3 and 14.
All in all it does not seem like either CPU or memory are stretched by running a single tunnel.

The GUI interface looks exactly the same as the GTX VPN help, so I guess it is the same. With just one VPN tunnel it seems OK in terms of resource use, but it will be interesting to see what adding another concurrent one does. All in all though I am happier with this Modem / router than any I have had for years.

The updated OpenVPN version together with the apparent ability to have simultaneous vpn tunnels and set policies to determine which lan devices use which tunnels seems useful.
I imagine there are processor and performance overheads, but presuming the ability to use no tunnel at al is part of it, that could presumably avoid double tunnels with devices that have their own vpn client software permanently active

Yes, I think you are right, the issues seem to be sufficient and the the investment priorities changed such that it may remain unfixed. Not really aa concern to me though as the synch rate is so good.
It did as mentioned need use of the stability adjustment by a couple of db to get it, but the error rate is not high enough to worry about and the variation in SNR over the day is no more than 0.2 db so it never drops below 4.1
I rather wish though that the 82U had a 2.5 gb port though as it would have been nice to benefit from a 2.5 gb uplink for AIMesh to an AX86 both now and after I eventually get FTTH

Yes. First time since the days of DSL I have pretty much got what the package could deliver and keen to keep it that way.
Suspect, even though I have not bothered to so so yet that I would get a full fibre connection from a local provider before G.inp is available on cabs around me. I gather they all seems to be ECI

Thanks Won’t be updating it then.
ECI fastpath up and down G.inp off as the cab cannot do it. downstream SNR 4.3 db I used the stability adjustment a while back to improve the bandwidth as it was always a stable line with my previous modem/router (it gets around 180 error seconds/day at most downstream and 40 up now). In fact the increase in speed by the stability adjustment was less than that which happened when the DLM put me back on fastpath a week ago. before it went to fastpath inp was originally 4, moved to three on a previous occasion DLM intervened and now of course is at 0

I would not worry to much about the memory usage. Although I have managed to get it to crash once, (almost certainly on account of memory handling) I had to go out of my way to do it.
Before that memory usage with a 14 day up-time was hovering in the mid 70% region and it looks like buffers were being reused (occasionally the % used dropped a bit).
The other thing is that this is a newly released AX modem/router and firmware can take time to mature. It needs lots of people to own one, expose it to different conditions/setups and tell Asus when there are issues. My bet though is that given a relative lack of competition for single box AX solutions and slow rate of innovation in the market, they will get the ongoing sales that justify providing good support and firmware development.
I think it will a long time until there is something I would consider replacing it with, (say a single box wifi 6e solution with mesh capability and one or more 2.5 Gbe ports)

The memory handling does seem suspect. Tried the following experiment when the memory use was at an 82%Â memory used start point.
Loaded Samba, transferred about 20 Gb via ethernet from the USB stick I had put in. Memory went to 94% used but no other issues.
Quit Samba. Memory seemingly not released, stayed at 94%.
Reloaded Samba – Reboot triggered.

3.0.0.4.386_42438
The restoration util is there, It is on the support tab, same place as the more recent firmware, just get it to show all downloads.
I did upgrade the firmware and the performance is at least the same as that it came with. Not sure why Asus shipped it with the version they did, given they are not listing 3.0.0.4.386_41776 as the initial release.

How has the unit been so far @El3rt1cal? Are you running it as it came from ASUS or loaded Merlin on it? I’m tempted to by one but a little weary due to the usual teething problems until its been out a while :) Kev
Seems fine, stable and the Wifi reach is very good. I am using stock, firmware for at least the next couple of weeks. It was worth buying it and I expect prices will drop a bit, so it may be a good idea to wait.

sure thanks, hopefully someone can advise if connection has been stable :) Thanks Kev
From a couple of days use the connection seems as reliable on VDSL 80/20 as the Billion 8800 axl I was replacing (which was rock solid). Little or no difference in any of the key stats. I am on a decent line, but it is also possible to adjust to provide greater stability. Wifi also seems issue free, (I have an AX 86U which I got a while back meshed to it).

Tekshop247.com I used Pricespy when @wizard1’s post suggested they might be released here soon. There were about 5 sellers at the time.
Yes, the DSL-AC88U had promise with the move to a Broadcom chipset, pity it did not work out. I hope (and expect) this will be different. It is particularly good to see GNUton making Merlin available on this one.

It is here and I received mine this morning. They seem to be around £199-140 inc delivery (dependent on who from and how soon it is wanted). I expect they will be sub £200 from most places by May
I know what you mean about the DSL-AC88U . Pre launch they were making claims including link aggregation that were never fulfilled. I think this one is likely to be different though given the pricing and that it should get a lot of buyers as one of the only single box AX solutions.
The only real negative without having set it all up and being able to see how reliable for me is is the lack of a 2.5 gbe ethernet port.
