So I found the radio 5G OFF setting was causing this. See previous post.
Firmware version v1.1.2.3_790 bugs
- 5G radio OFF while 2,4G radio ON causes AC-51 router to hang on a reboot / power-cycle. (WPS button behavior is on Toggle Radio, if that matters)
- – System Log – General Log, fails to load completely or does not show the the latest entries / loading partially. This is under Chrome browser.
The webpage at https://192.168.1.1:8443/cgi-bin/status_log2.cgi might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
Will update again if it makes it past 17 days runtime ;-)

(latest firmware’s are at end of threads) For following ASUS DSL Modem Routers: DSL-AC51 DSL-AC52U DSL-AC55U DSL-AC56U DSL-AC750 DSL-N10-C1 – (extended beta support... #5396DSL-AC51 running Beta_790 – runtime maximum of 17 days.
After 14 – 17 days runtime the router locks up and needs a HARD reset.
Last time I looked after 16 Days, free RAM was down to 5 MB.One other thing, the router does not power up by itself after a power outage, firmware update or memory lock-up. It just hangs.
To get it going again I have to press and hold the reset button and power it up for 30 seconds so that it goes into to rescue mode. Power off and repeat the same, press and hold the reset button and power it up for 30 seconds. Only then after 2 or 3 rescue mode attempts it powers up normally again. The router retains its settings.
I have 5G radio disabled, maybe that’s causing it ?So I ended up with a router that stops working after max 17 days, and wont boot anymore (even after a power-cycle) which is a major annoyance. ;-(
edit: new firmware is here

If your ISP did not implement modern techniques like G.INP and.or vectoring you should be on an interleaved profile.
System Log – DSL Log –> Path ModeIf you’re not on interleaved but on Fast Path () you need to reduce your line speed by increasing SNR Margin or call the ISP to check your line for interference or ask to be put on interleaved which causes additional latency unfortunately.
Goto Administration – DSL Setting – VDSL settings –> Stability Adjustment
Start with 7 dB and work up to get your line more stable.for ADSL
Goto Administration – DSL Setting – common settings –> disable Dynamic Line Adjustment (DLA)

- ADSL or VDSL ?
- Uncapped line or not ?
- Interleaved or Fast Path ?
- G.INP available ?
- G.vector enabled (VDSL) ?
All these things matter a lot in line noise reduction. Not the dslam brand, infineon/ broadcom.

Is there a problem? When is Official published?
Too early to tell. But I will update here if it has improved.
Still many issues that need to be addressed, like System Log – General Log erratic behavior. But the memory leak issues are the most important to me.

@lostcause – if @kamiboy new firmware fixed the issues, I will ask ASUS if we can have a fix for the DSL-AC51 and others (MediaTeK based devices)

Yes hopefully they look into it. Having to reboot the device every week/other week upsets the ISP DLM.

Hello Dear , ASUS contact me and kindly they send me a new beta FW (DSL-N16_9.1.2.3_786-g086cfb6.trx.zip) and i want to share it with you and other people :
https://www.asuswebstorage.com/navigate/a/#/s/0DFB1D256B9244F88F3B3D7FF3425E16Y
hopefully it fix wifi and vpn issues.
DSL-AC51 has the same issues. I reached out to Asus some time ago through the GUI feedback form, but so far no response yet.
Hopefully they will provide a new FW for the DSL-AC51 as well. You need to login in order to vote
@lostcause – I will show ASUS this post and see what they say
Thanks, highly appreciated!
Additional info: My router runs almost stock settings and has a light load with only a maximum of 3 devices attached at one time. (2WLAN/1LAN)
I just let it do its job, until it becomes unresponsive. You need to login in order to vote
Mine has been running for 12 days now, with free RAM around 4 MB. Will see how much longer it can go. Firmware Version:v9.1.2.3_783
Ok, had to reboot this morning, router became unresponsive, no connection possible, either through WLAN or LAN.
So it lasted a little over 12 days without reboot.- before reboot 3/4MB free RAM
- after reboot 11/12MB free RAM
- router only has 3 phones (2 simultaneously) connecting through WLAN and only 1 PC through LAN
- older firmwares that i tried experience the same issue. (But have not tried all versions)
- System log > General log does not show the most recent entries, only older up to a certain timestamp. This timestamp varies after you hit the refresh button. But it seldom shows the most recent log entry. Sometimes it doesn’t show a log it all. The non beta firmware has this issue as well.
Much more minor bugs in the firmware, but the RAM/Reboot issue and the log entries stand out for me.

Hello.my asus dsl-n16 has issue with wifi. some times wifi connection drop and i can’t connect to wifi . also i notice that FREE RAM IS ONLY 3 MB!! IS IT NORMAL?
Mine does the same, free RAM drops to 4MB.
Usually it runs fine for 1-2weeks, then suddenly you can’t connect through WIFI any more. Turning the radio OFF/ON through the admin page gets it going again.
Also when you have the wireless scheduler enabled, when the wifi radio turns off, it also turns off your LAN.
Mine has been running for 12 days now, with free RAM around 4 MB. Will see how much longer it can go. Firmware Version:v9.1.2.3_783

October 11, 2019 at 2:40 am in reply to: ASUS – DSL-AC88U / DSL-AC3100 Firmwares (beta's) etc. Looks like a new Beta Release for the DSL-AC88U is available, this version has Telnet enabled and improved 2.4GHz wifi (I believe). DSL-AC88U_v9.10.06_build581_debug.w.zip https://www.asuswebstorage.com/navigate/s/604D61534F2541D1B3CE1CC031A697E4Y UK Sentinel In a completely... #4760A year between updates wouldn’t be too bad if it weren’t so riddled with bugs and issues in the first place! For some of these issues to go unfixed for a whole year is scandalous.
Even that I dont own a dsl-ac88u, I could not agree more. For an enthusiast product which it is, ..otherwise people would just use the ISP provided modem.., you release firmware updates in a timely fashion. Even if they only contain tiny fixes.
It shows your customers you stand behind your product. You need to login in order to vote
