Just popping back to say thanks again for the help earlier in the week. I’ve nothing to report. I’m having far less ‘fun’ than Kev! The vigor – so far – just works as does the rt-ac86u. Everything I want to work works. I’ve battled away with asus routers for years and finally this one with merlin firmware works exactly as it’s supposed to with no issues (I hope I’m not tempting fate saying that!). Big thumbs up for the recommendations.

I plugged mine into the socket and then a laptop, the update button is in the GUI. Once done I then plugged in the router. It’s all running swimmingly at the moment. After the dsl ac88u it’s like a dream.

Yes, that’s what worked for me. Not sure how stable everything is. The modem seems to be up, but the router has disconnected a couple of times. I’ll try what you suggest later on after work. Thanks again for your help, much appreciated

Sorry that should read ‘now got’ – the internet is working. Thanks so much for the tips. I was getting towards pulling my hair out. I cope without accessing the modem for a while. I guess it will end up bugging me though

Factory reset both router and modem, given static IP to PC, no joy. Chrome says DNS problem. I’ve set the router to use Google’s DNS.
In the Draytek MPoA is disabled. I’m guessing this ought to be enabled, not PPPoE? I’m just swapping that around to see that brings any joy. It does seem to have worked! Hooray. But whilst I’ve not got a functioning internet the new problem is that the Draytek has become inaccessible via 192.168.2.1 . What fun,

I’m giving that a go. None of my devices will connect at the moment. It’s only been four hours so far …

I thought that had sorted it – factory reset of the vigor. When it started up the PC registered as being connected but just as quickly disconnected again. Now the router shows as connected, but the PC not. I’ve been at this for hours now!

Hello there. Not been here for a while! I’ve just got a vigor 130 and an rt ac86u. I’m having some problems connecting. The vigor seems to be connecting to my talktalk fibre, it says under Interface that dsl is connected. However, whilst that is up, under IPv4 Internet Access the WAN1 vdsl/PPPoE is disconnected.
I’m not very clued up with this kind of thing. I’ve tried setting the asus to PPPoE under the WAN settings. I’ve tried inputting the IP address in the WAN IP setting. No joy. I remain disconnected. Also the router won’t allow me to change to PPPoE without inputting user name and password. Talktalk don’t require these, so is it the modem password or the draytek password? I’m a bit lost at this point.
Hope someone can offer a pointer. Thanks in advance

I think it’s probably a god amongst the ac88u models. I’ll be selling tickets for people to come in and look at it soon. It might end up like Lourdes. There could be an entire industry sets up down the street selling replica aerials and rj45 cable. But, oh dear, this is just a dream isn’t it. The crown is about to be be wrested from my grasp. If only I hadn’t rebooted on Sunday afternoon. Everything could have been so different.
Unless, unless, unless I manage to locate your address via some sort of reverse ip seach in conjunction with cross-references to past posts and cut your line!

And guess what, I got to 129 days without issue, but then the ADSL went down at the ISP end of things. but rather than trust it definitely was the ISP I rebooted. Who knows how much longer it would have gone on for otherwise. It was sitting happily at 46% mem usage up till then.
