2x usb because one is running torrents, the other is full – absolutely full – of music files. Connecting to a LAN port sounds like a good idea, but I don’t have a WD cloud, just some old HDDs.

I bought mine off ebay, thinking it was a good deal for a relatively new top end dsl router. But it don’t really do much more than the old n56u I had before it. Slightly better at streaming from USB is all. What a disgraceful display from Asus. First they stung me with the diabolical dsl n55u, then I went with the n56u which wasn’t toooooo bad, then they closed their really helpful forums, then I got this. I guess that’s the end of the line for me and asus. Sadly big companies like this don’t really care much. So what if they lose some customers here and there. People will still buy their routers and their mobos.
Perhaps it’s best to list mine on ebay sooner rather than later. They were holding their value quite well last I looked. Once this news gets out their value will likely go down. Plus I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking to put one on ebay all of a sudden.
Any recommendations for a dsl router that will run two usb drives, for torrents and hi res music streaming? Maybe I should go separate modem and router. It’s all going to have to wait for a while anyhow. Wish I’d got out while the going was so obviously bad. Instead, preferring to avoid the hassle I decided to wait for the new firmware. Mistake!
Cheers all.

If the locking up of the router was sorted I’d have no issues to speak of.

Since its marathon 120+ days up it’s been falling down more frequently (every few weeks for the last month) – the router appears to be working but everything becomes inaccessible. So I reboot it and it’s fine again. 2ghz wireless sometimes isn’t working when it reboots so I disable/enable and it’s fine. I can cope with this for the time being (I only use 2ghz for the printer anyway). I see they still go for up to ÂŁ120 on ebay so I’ve considered selling it on, but wouldn’t that be a bit mean? Plus I’m not sure I can afford the effort involved in getting another set up to do what this one is doing. I suppose I’m not trying to do anything too complex – straight internet & torrents/streaming from usbs so whilst I’m not especially happy with Asus for springing this on me, I can live with the router for a while. I probably won’t be living with another Asus one after this though.

I won’t be going to ASUS again for a router. I doubt they care about what we all think though. They are a huge company and seemingly can afford to upset a few people. I had similar experiences with the dsl ac55u. I won’t be dong it again.
Meanwhile, I have to admit to defeat in the contest with jetspeed. My 88u fell over last night after only 20 or so days – no internet, router inaccessible, had to reboot. It seems like the 100+ days up was a rare occurrence.

I’m at 10 days 22 hours at the moment. I’m sure to make it to February without any new firmware appearing so I might be get past 120 days! The trick, as far as I can tell, is to turn everything off. No AI. No VPN & hardly any wifi devices. I do use it to stream music and to run torrents, but other than that it doesn’t do anything complicated.

I went to something like 120 or so in the end. I would have been well on the way again if builders hadn’t cut through the power the other day.

I know I don’t think that. But who knows, I’m often wrong.

I’m less knowledgeable than everyone else here so I can’t say for anything complex, but I was still having memory issues until I turned off the open vpn server. After that it went for over 100 days without issue. It did finally become inaccessible – though it was still functioning – last week. Also from time to time I have to turn on and turn off 2ghz to get things to connect.
